(Sandy Stimpson)Cassie Fambro | cfambro@al.com Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson knew he would get quite the response when he announced his new tourism initiative, aimed at making Mobile a destination. Then, he went to Miami, a city that's home to several cruise liner companies, including Carnival. It didn't take long for people to put the pieces together, and Thursday morning, Stimpson posted an image teasing that he would be bringing a cruise ship back to Mobile. "Now, how will I fit this in my suitcase?" he teased, standing next to Carnival headquarters in the image. The city is not giving out more information yet, but a press conference is scheduled Thursday when the mayor gets back into town. For now, many are hoping that the initiative means finally using the cruise ship terminal which has seen far more proms and charity events than ship traffic, with the exception of a few Carnival mishaps. In his tourism announcement, he laid out the reasons why bringing the cruise industry back to Mobile would benefit the region. Our success will create jobs in the hospitality industry, grow visitor numbers & hotel room nights and increase tax revenue for the City — Sandy Stimpson (@MayorStimpson) September 2, 2015 Congressman Bradley Byrne joined in on social media, showing his support before an early rotary club meeting. cruzeluver Posted September 3, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 3, 2015 This is also being discussed in the Carnival forum. Wonder what they would do different this time to make it work. Before Carnival had to discount the cruises out of Mobile so heavily they were not profitable.
