Walk slowly through old town. Find the skinniest dim lit bar and have a drink or a coffee. then go back to the square at night and just suck it in. Buy a (or more) bottle of ron del barallito 3 star even if you do not partake. Bring it home save for a special time.

Does anyone have suggestions of what to do with a late afternoon arrival time? We'd rather not spend our evening eating at a restaurant or drinking at a local dive, unless there's an element to this that's unique to Old San Juan. Do any of the local restaurants have interesting shows? Are there night time tours that could be of interest?

I am not an expert on San Juan but there are several pretty famous restaurants in Old San Juan, Barrachina has flamenco dancing and apparently wonderful food. Try Trip Advisor you should find several options. We will be there next week and strolling around in the evening is very different from going during the day. It is hard to find anything to do and that is why a lot of people don't like the stop. If you venture more towards the center of town the squares are charming. The shops close at 5:30 or 6:00. But if you hop right off the ship, and it has ported on time you can walk over to El Morrow, lovely fort and worth going to see. You can check the hours of operation online to see what time it closes the day you are in port.
