South Boardwalk access

Visiting on cruise ship for one day -- would like to take a taxi or be dropped off at end of island tour at the beginning or end of the South Boardwalk. We just want to take a stroll on the boardwalk, maybe stop for a drink. We don't want to walk on the sandy beach or swim or anything. Where should we tell the taxi take us so that we are at the beginning or end of the boardwalk? Are there hotels along the boardwalk or restaurants where we could maybe have lunch or a drink? Thanks in advance!

Are the boardwalks access able from the ship? Walking? We have an excursion in the am, but would like to walk around the area in the afternoon. Can we do this without a taxi? Is there shopping/dinning etc without have to venture to far from the port?
