We're in Napier and are interested in the 2 hour art deco walking tour from the Trust. The Classic Car tour also interests us. How far is the town from the port, does Princess lines charge for the shuttle and any other helpful tips greatly appreciated.

The shuttle in to Napier is free and drops you at the i site. (information centre) As Napier is a working port you are not allowed to walk off the port on foot.

Napier was devastated in the early 30's by earthquake and fire and some forward thinking people suggested that the redevelopment should be in the Art Deco style. This was achieved and even today any new development in the city centre keeps that style. Napier now claims to be "The Art Deco Capital of the World).

A very pleasant day can be spent just walking around the CBD or if wine is your "thing" then Napier is in Hawke's Bay, one of the best wine producing areas of New Zealand. Why not take a wine tour and visit some of the spectacular vineyards in the area.

One of the worlds top ten golf courses is nearby. Cape Kidnappers. There is a Gannet Colony that can also be visited.

It is also worth noting that Napier Port is quite small in size and the process of getting a large cruise ship moored safely is worth watching from the open decks.

Whatever you do, enjoy.

On our last trip to Napier on the Dawn our ship excursion was cancelled due to lack of numbers. However we managed to get another that included the Aquarium, Art Deco centre and the Napier prison now used as a backpackers which was quite spooky and I got a couple of very eerie shots.

If we went there again I would just get the shuttle into the city and explore what the town has to offer as it is quite an interesting place to visit.

As Kiwipete indicated watching the ship being backed into a very narrow space is fascinating to watch and a credit to the skill of the bridge team.

We did a ships tour to Cape Kidnappers a couple of years ago. Located on private property about 20km south of Napier it was a really interesting 1/2 day tour finished off with a tour of Napier.

Well worth it if you have nothing else organised...
