Close encounter returning to ship at ports

Has anyone ever experienced a close call making it back to the ship? I would like to go to St. John from St. Thomas, but it seems like a real hike to get there. One thing I do not want to do is panic on vacation. How much time does one allow to be safe? TIA

My experience has been that the cruise lines say you need to be back on board 1/2 hr prior to sailing. Was on one cruise and the ship had pulled away from the pier about 10 feet when two people came speeding down the pier in a car. Ship put back in and picked them up. That is a little to close.

FredS,

WOW! This is what I am afraid of. Sometimes things can happen beyond your control. Maybe that was the case with these two people.

roe2ship,
The last couple of times that we have gone to St. Thomas we have gone to St. Johns via the ferry at the dock in downtown Charolet Amalie. The ferry leaves every 2hours beginning around 9:00AM. Ride takes about 45min. and cost $7.00?? Taxi to downtown $5.00. You can also take a taxi over to Red Hook ($8.00pp) and then take the the Red Hook Ferry for about $3.00. This ferry leaves every hour. When you get off the ferry you can grab an open air truck/taxi to one of the beaches for about $5.00. This will give you plenty of time to hit the beaches and two options to get back to St. Thomas so you don't miss the boat.
