Any freebies that you know about?

Recommended Posts

Hi, we always take our own sea sick tablets, but you can get them for much less in the pharmacy, Mecalzine is the same exact thing as Bonine. In a Bonine package you get may be 8 tablets for $6 or $8 dollars. You just go to the pharmacist and ask for over the counter generic bonine which is Mecalzine and you get probably 100 tablets for about $7 or $8 dollars, much more cost effective. And it works great , no seasickness, no drowsyness.

Just ask your local pharmacist.( can't get it at walmart)

We are wondering about just how much seasick meds we wuld need on a cruise fromLA to Hawaii in December. any ideas? And what works best? Should we take more than one kind?

I just returned from the Caribbean and got a couple of freebies.

In St. Thomas, they had a shop (don't remember the name) that gave out free birthstones. Granted, they are small but they're real stones on a silver pendant (no chain included). It's a nice gift for a small girl.

Also, in Nassau Bahamas, they had a shop giving out free gem stones (I got a free 1 karat Garnet - cut but not set). The same shop I bought Majorca pearl earings for $2 and a Majorca pearl pendant for $2.

I kick myself for not doing it, but Diamonds International was giving out free charm bracelets. In each port you can get a free charm to put on your bracelet. NCL gave out the coupons for this freebie.

Hi, with the meclazine that I mentioned, you take one or two tablets a day and that is all you need , so for 7 days you would need, 14 tablets per person, etc....... Meclazine is all we use, some folks use the patch but it is prescription only and has some scary side effects, and it is pricey.

CS did you sail with NCL, and can you give me some more info about Nassau. I am planning on sailing on NCL and one of the stops is Nassau. I don't know anything about coupons, how do I go about getting one

Yes, it was NCL. They give out some of the coupons in the Freestyle Daily and some you can only get by attending their shopping meeting onboard. I went to the shopping meetings (took roungly 1/2 hour) and got the stickers for the free gemstone. I wouldn't have known about it if I didn't go - they only gave them out there. There's a row of shops owned by the same person and they're referred to as "Go Left".

The pendant I got by chance. I actually saw the sign on the door of the shop that said free birthstone. Keep your eyes open for signs like that.

What is the Freestyle Daily and what shooping meetings are hosted by whom? Thanks

The Freestyle Daily is a daily newsletter that's left in your cabin each day by the cabin stewards. It tells you about the daily activities (times, locations, etc.). Sometimes it will have daily specials onboard (sales at the spa, drink specials, t-shirt sales, etc.). Sometimes they tuck flyers/coupons into the middle of it. You should try to read the whole thing cause the special deals and/or freebies might not be very obvious.

The shopping meetings are hosted by NCL. I think they're called port meetings or something like that. The times/locations will be in the Freestyle Daily.

I started the Diamonds International Charm Bracelet a couple of cruises ago. It is a cute momento. We try to make sure we see some different port on every cruise. DI is generally easy to find. You can go to the DI website and see the whole set of charms.

Diamonds International gave out free diamond (tiny) ear rings on Antigua, I am sure they give out at other ports too. We also got a gold pineapple pin in Antigua.

There are lots of coupons for free stuff in St. Thomas if you pick up one of the free Virgin Islands booklet at any tourist store.

On St.Maarten they give you $50.00US if you stop for a timeshare chat, there are people trying to entice you as you come off the ferry.

On our Ship (Adventure of the Seas) we got free champagne at the art auction.

In all the ladies rest rooms are free feminine hygine products (pads and tampons).

On board freebies..well free drinks at the welcome back parties, captain's party, art auction. New years eve as I recall has free champage. If they have a bar tending class, they will have free tastings. Then there are "drink" of the day deals, happy hours, martini madness hours, etc.

The art auction gives away a print. Most activites have some sort of reward. Christmas gifts to each stateroom. RCCL's diamond status hospitality lounge on select ships I believe offers evening cocktails.

Read the ships activities news letter, and simply ask. It does turn into a scavenger hunt sort of mind set.

Meclazine CAN be found at Wal-Mart. If it is not on the shelf, ask the pharmacist. If it is not in stock, they will order it for you. I take one on the morning prior to my cruise and one each day. If it is especially rough water as in the Bay of Biscay or Drake's Passage, I will take two. As most of the cruises I go on are four weeks long, I know that it works for me. Those little packages of Bonine would be a problem for me . I know that a bottle of 100 makes me feel secure at less than half the price of the name brand.

I got free tampons from purser's desk last cruise cuz I couldn't fathom buying them at the ship's shop for a trillion dollars. Also, the casino will give you a deck of cards, old dice (holes drilled thru them--kids love to string 'em on a cord for a necklace), and one of those coil do-hickeys that you can attach your S&S card to. Oh, and the kid's club onboard will give you something really cool if you simply go over, tell them you have a little one at home, and ask them if they have something you can bring back for them. They usually give me terrific stuff (no crap or junkie junk). :)

Any cruise I have been on if you go to the past cruisers party there are free drinks, and appies! Did a Christmas cruise a few years back and when we boarded they were giving away rum punch, and a few other drinks for free as well. Going to the activites is always goos. We went to a Spa demo and my friend was asked to help with the demonstration, and in return was given a free service in the Ships Spa. IF you do activies that are organised by the CD they sometimes have free stuff. RCCL on your second cruise gives you a coupon book of goodies! Happy Cruising

After the sailaway party at the beginning of the cruise, there will be lots of people who leave their souvenir glasses behind. We took several, rinsed them out, and then took them home. After a trip through the dishwasher, they are good as new.

MMM, take things that don't belong to you, there might be an ethical issue on this advise.

What if people leave their souvenir items (lanyards, logo corkscrews, tote bags, shot glasses, luggage straps, alarm clocks, dice, cards) behind, do you take them home?

Only know about Carnival but here goes - They used to give free cards in the Casino but last time we cruised they were selling them for $1/pack. Just plain ole playing cards but with a sticker showing the date they were used. They do give out the free lanyards and will punch your S&S card for you. If you go to the library when it is open, the attendant will give you a crossword puzzle of the day and a trivia quiz. Some ships have these sitting out, others you have to ask for them. On most Carnival ships there is a ship's log in the library, put there by anoth CC member - be sure to sign it and it's fun to read the other entries. If you are one of the first to board, if you run up to the spa immediately, you can volunteer to have a massage, etc. when they have the tour later in the day. It is free but you will have hords of people coming in while they demonstrate. However, you are usually on your stomach so no one sees your face - LOL. Free drinks at the Captain's Welcome Party and Past Guest Party as well as the first and last days of the art auctions (as mentioned earlier). Also, if you go to the shop talk on the first sea day, sit down near the front because they throw samples of items out in the audience. T-shirts, etc. I caught a black pearl necklace in a box on one cruise. DH and DS caught a (small) bottle of vanilla and (small) bottle of liqueur on another. If you volunteer for anything on stage no matter how silly, you will be rewarded with a bottle of champagne. Then there's that elusive "ship on a stick" that is free to winners of contests! DS brought one home and it sits proudly on our mantle above the fireplace. Oh, one more thing, if you write a letter to Carnival after returning from your cruise, they will respond with a letter that entitles you to a gift on your next cruise with them that can be redeemed 45 days before your next cruise. I just redeemed our letter for our upcoming cruise and got free photo coupons! That's about all I can think of for now. Good luck!!! Joan
