tenmile Posted January 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2016 We will be in San Juan in 2 weeks and want to know if walking to El Morro from the pier and then walking back through Old Town is safe and feasible. How long does it take to walk to El Morro? Are there any areas we should avoid? Our ship does not dock until 3 pm, so some of this walking may be after dark. I appreciate any advice you can give us. Also, can anyone recommend a good private tour company that gives tours of Old San Juan and El Morro? Thanks! Linda

There is an area known as "La Perla" on the north side of the city, between the two forts, which is not regarded as safe. You have to make an effort to get down there. Don't make the effort. Walking time to El Morro probably about 20 minutes, but it's hot and uphill so don't be afraid to take longer. There is also a path along the harbor outside the city walls, and a promenade between the forts overlooking the Atlantic (and La Perla). Can't recommend a company, but within the forts rangers sometimes give informative tours.
VTcruisenut Posted January 19, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Go to the Port website- there is a Trolley that goes around the city with various stops the schedule and cost is there. We were there last March and took a private bus tour for $20 per person, but didn't see much - and they didn't go anywhere near the fort to drop us off to see that. I would go with the trolley.
