I guess we will have to send the idea to CalTech and see if there might be solution. Actually, some of the new padded, anti-skid deckings on land, if they were waterproof, might work. I have a friend that works at corporate at Princess, and I will have her look at the setup at Fashion Island. I know we always stop and watch the kids play.

Dragging this hijacked thread back to the topic, I am quite curious about something. The local YMCA (in fact Y's nationwide) have swimming instructional classes beginning at 6 months. The class at our local Y is taught in the regular swimming pool. I wonder why they would allow this when the cruiselines don't? Only stipulation is that you don't bring the child if he/she has been sick.
I know this because my 1 y/o just finished the course & has done so well that we've been asked to be "guest dad & baby" in the upcoming course so that others can see that it's ok to be adventurous with baby.
As for the "why would you bring a baby" and "do you stiff the staff" comments/questions, what a bunch of crap. Why bring him? Why wouldn't I. He is a major part of our family, 1/3 of it as a matter of fact. I enjoy being around he & his mom more than anyone else. We're respectful of others, if he starts crying or acting up we take him away & settle him down. I doubt he's any more offensive to anyone than the "adults" who get sloppy drunk & can't pronounce any words other than $##@% #%@% and #$%@ without slurring them. As for tipping the staff, yes we tip the staff. We also policed the dining area & left it as clean (or cleaner) than it was when we arrived, despite staff telling us not to do so. As a matter of fact, the three of us make a whole lot less of a mess at a table than the gluttonous slobs who make 5 passes through the buffet line, not including the 3 trips to the dessert section.

We are not anti-children on this board. All that we are asking for is consideration on the part of the parents traveling with their children in regards to passengers who, by choice, are not traveling with children.

Enjoy your family time with you little ones in the areas of the ship which are specifically designed & designated for the activities of infants, toddlers, children, or teens. It is a given that meal time is for everyone but crying, disruptive or unruly passengers, of any age, should immediately be removed from the dining room so as not to disturb others.

Compare "children/no children" to the "smoker/non-smoker" issues. Knowing that an area is designated as such allows each passenger to determine if they wish to be exposed to the pleasures/hazards of either (the smoking or the children). Such provisions provide for the health, safety & comfort of all passengers.

Hmmmm. The tone of the question "Why would you even bring a toddler on a cruise" and "Did you stiff the staff" didn't exactly sound overly "kid-friendly."
My child rarely cries (yes, I know we are lucky). When he does so & we're in a common area (or a dining area, or anywhere else that he would be bothering someone) he is promptly removed from that area. Trust me, I understand being annoyed by kids. We are older parents; had been married 16 years before he came along, wifey's pushing 40 & I'm pulling it. So we understand not wrecking someone else's time with a screaming baby.
I disagree somewhat with your fellings about the common areas & that I should stick to the kiddie area when with the kiddie. Twisting around your comment re the smoking/no smoking, CP has an area (the spa), that is adults only, including the pool. Maybe if you don't want kids around you should stick to the adults only area? BTW, I did sneak off to that spot a few times when I wanted some quiet, as did wifey.

It was always my assumption that the chemicals they pour into the pool kill off any bacteria that might be lurking from leaking swim diapers or whatever. At least thats what the pool guy says!
That doesn't mean I swim in public pools anyway- its the psychological gross out factor that keeps me out. I am the Mom of a 4 year old and have the identical philosophy as SeaPA. We make it a point not to disturb anyone's peace...everywhere we go.

That's assuming the pool is properly kept...E. Coli infection from an accident killed a few kids at a water park and sickened several others even tho technically, E. Coli should be killed within in a minute or so in a properly kept pool.

Also, refer to my above posted CDC article for info on the times it takes to kill various viruses, etc.

Since cruise lines allow children you also choose to travel with children.

If you want an entirely kid free vacation pick a vacation that provides that feature.

Until that point while on vacation keep all your friendly advice to your self unless asked.

When my daughter was under 1 we went to the movies with her all the time. We would always see the 9 or later show because we knew she would sleep through the entire movie.

As we entered the theater we would always get nasty and I mean nasty looks from the "We are not anti children crowd" at the theater.

At the end of the movie they would always stop by and make small talk about how quiet she had been. Their crappy attempts at apoligizing for thinking such awful thoughts about us on the way in.

As for the pool, swim diapers are just gross. Anyone who tells you they contain the mess are mis informed.

Would it keep me from swiming in a public pool? No. So long as I don't see a brown trail dripping from the diaper. I have probably been exposed to the same or worse each time I eat out but I don't get to see into the kitchen.

Public pools that allow swim diapers do it because they have a proper procedure in place to handle accidents.

The CDC does not trust the cruise lines to follow proper procedure. You would probably need a lifeguard on duty to watch for spills and close the pool. The cruise lines are not willing to pay that salary.

Disney did have people watching for spills on their ships. On our cruise the pool was being scrubbed out more often then it was being used. However they too must abide by the CDC.

Urine would be contamination that chemicals will take care off. When feces contamination happens, the pool has to be drained. That is a big difference.

E Coli is a bacteria that is notoriously hard to get rid of. Many antibiotics are ineffective. The bacteria itself have like little suction cups that adhere to a wall of human tissue and do not want to let go. This is besides being a dangerous and deadly bacteria to people in high risk age groups...children and the elderly.

This is why warnings are posted at pools. The very child who is most susceptible to getting the bacteria and dying from it (an infant) is also the one most likely to spread the bacteria. Parents are not doing their infants any favors by taking them into communal pools. Wait until they are older and their immune systems can handle that type of exposure.

I still would love to see that alleged chemical one could put in a pool that causes a red ring to encirlce anyone who pees in it...
Is that an urban legend?

If we were to keep all our friendly advice to ourselves, we woun't have a cruise discussion board to ask questions and receive advise from many cruisers, with many different answers. You have also given your opinion today.

Kevin,

They also allow smokers to smoke in designated areas so as not to bother the other passengers. You may think your little darling is not a health, safety or comfort concern but to some passengers they are!

The effects of being exposed to children second-hand is as intolerable as the effects of being exposed to second-hand smoke. Passengers are allowed to have tobacco products with them anywhere on the ship but should go to the appropriate area when they light them up to enjoy their "pleasures". The same thing applies to children - you can have them anywhere on the ship but please go to the appropriate area to enjoy your "pleasures".

May you & your little clone(s) enjoy your cruise & leave us to enjoy ours!

If the cruise lines designate an area as adults only then that area is for use by adults only.

That I know of most cruise lines do not designate many if any areas as adults only.

In this case they have designated the pools for use by potty trained humans only.

Where else on their ships has Princess designated for use only by Kids?

Kevin....

On the Golden Princess, the Fun Zone, Off Limits and Voyage of Discovery are all designated for kids. In fact, in Off Limits, they even have their own hot tub, and Fun Zone has a splash pool.

We're not sure if they are smoking or non-smoking though.

Below are the deck plans showing those areas:

BTW, the lap pool by the Lotus spa, the Terrace Pool at the stern of the ship, and most of the hot tubs are designated for adults only.

Wouldn't it be great if they put that pheno whatever-you-call-it in the food so we'd know who all the peeing culprits are!??

Due to a typo I asked the wrong question.

I was wondering if Princess has truly designated any areas as adult only?

Years ago I went camping with a bunch of friends. We went swimming at a "hot springs pool". There were tons of people, toddlers to adults, there but it was soooo hot I decided to swim anyway.(VERY STUPID MOVE! And before this kind of comtanination was documented)
Well, I ended up with Shegella (sp)and so did 3 other people I went camping with. I ended up in the hospital for 3 days. My Dr. thought I had meningitius. (The symptoms headache, severe stomach pain, very high fever, severe body pains, vomiting and diaherria lasted for weeks!!!!)
I was a full grown healthy adult and was unable to function for 3 weeks. I don't know if an infant or toddler could have survived...

What I don't understand is why if you know this kind of disease can be spread by "Fecal accidents" how you could subject other people to getting sick? Keep the folks all ages in diapers OUT OF THE ADULTS ONLY POOLS! Believe me the diseases you can get can be very serious!!
Fecal tea bag really sums it up!!!
