Holland American Indonesian Cruise - Data

Volendam's data plan is prohibitive. They charge 0.75 US cts per minute of access and the lowest package is USD50 for 100 minutes of use.

Ship wifi is good, fast, managed to use it about 10 times when there was no data from a local Indon SIM card which I bought at Jakarta. I mainly used Whatsapp on it, so I prepared all the replies I needed, then logged in for a minute. Managed to send out the Whatsapp and retrieve messages. Saved a lot.

In addition, I bought a local XL brand SIM card (wrong choice for Komodo which only has Telkomsel signal). This worked well in all the cities and towns we docked or tendered. At some ports, we had to go to the upper decks. When sailing, the following zones could still have some data.

- South of Singapore along the Rhio islands (after Batam and Bintan).

- When sailing close to the two islands Bangka and Bilitong

- Rounding the peninsula north of Semarang

- Island close to Bali

However for most of the sea days, I could not get any signal from XL and had to use the ship WiFi.
