kcagg16 Posted October 7, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 7, 2005 Hi my family and I are cruising out of San Juan next year and we are researching hotels. We thought about staying at the Westin Rio Grande Mar Resort but that seems to be too far away. The Sheraton Old San Juan seems to be downtown where we could walk to different stores and restaurants as well as being close to the airport and port. Any thoughts anyone? alw1977 Posted October 7, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 7, 2005 I stayed there last April when I had an overnight layover before flying to St. Martin. It's a nice hotel. Not beachfront but close to Old San Juan. Lots of restaurants nearby (including Starbucks only a five minute walk away). Very close to one of the forts. I'd stay there again. Do note: pool is small and on rooftop. Has a nice gym and nice sized casino. Centrally located and room was pretty nice.
texancruzer Posted October 7, 2005 #3 Share Posted October 7, 2005 Not sure of your budget...but for something really special try http://www.elconvento.com It was built in 1650's as a Carmelite convent and is Puerto Rico's only 5 star.... they have some really good online special deals (also on the above website) for pre/post cruise stays. In the heart of Old San Juan near everything. We are staying here 2 nights precruise end of Nov.... can't wait.
robintennis Posted October 7, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 7, 2005 El convento is magnificent. We have stayed there in the past and it is so very, very charming. Even if we do not stay at this facility when in Puerto Rico, we still stop at the restaurant for calamari and glass of wine. Robin
constantcruiser Posted October 7, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 7, 2005 We've stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan (formerly Westin) several times when we flew to San Juan the night before a cruise. It's by far the most easily accessible to the cruiseship dock--directly across the street--and within easy walking distance of many shops & restaurants. When we stayed there 2 years ago, DH claimed it had the best scenery of any hotel he's ever stayed in...but I think that MIGHT have been because contestants for the Miss Universe Pageant were staying there! OPSoccermom Posted October 7, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 7, 2005 We stayed at the Westin Rio Mar pre-cruise last year, and I don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. yes, it's a little further away (it's close to El Yunque - the airport is probably half way between it and the Pan Am pier. But the transport provided by the cruiseline was very efficient, and the trip to the ship did not seem that long. This hotel has very nice facilities - golf, tennis, nice pool area, etc. WE took the hotel trip into El Yunque and that was also enjoyable. Especially nice if you have a family - lots for kids to do. Granted, if you're only coming in the night before your cruise, it may not be worth the extra drive, but we spent 2+ days there and loved it. We're doing a post-cruise stay in San Juan this April. This time we're staying at the Intercontinental on Isla Verde. Even if it's only one night's stay, our kids couldn't imagine spending a night in the Caribbean and not having the beach close by.
