BEAV Posted February 17, 2016 #26 Share Posted February 17, 2016 (edited) I just wrote to our T/A to ask if she has heard anything. If it was sold out, wouldn't it stay up at least until final payment, when there are normally some cancellations? Pride of America's March 15, 2016 sailing from SF to Honolulu (following dry dock in SF) was taken off sale for several months (something like Sept-Dec 2015), and reports were rampant as to why. Turned out a happy ending as the voyage went back on sale and the cruise is a "go" (although now truly sold out). We have or fingers crossed for a similar result :) An on-line TA shows a very high price - September 30th (ours) at almost $3000 each without taxes for a balcony --- it may have been selling well
CRUZBUDS Posted February 17, 2016 #28 Share Posted February 17, 2016 Our T/A spoke with NCL and she was told they are sold out also -- We hope it is successful for NCL, so they will do more from San Diego. It's a great port to sail from, even if we didn't live here. :D

It's a great port to sail from, even if we didn't live here. :D We're in Northern California and would choose to sail from San Diego over San Pedro (LAX) any day. The closeness of the San Diego airport to/from the pier, large variety of nearby hotels, not to mention the scenic sail out of of the bay are all contributing factors. SeahawkSiren Posted February 17, 2016 #31 Share Posted February 17, 2016 Does anyone know if NCL is going to do an October dry dock would it also be in Portland? Just curious because interestingly enough the 4 night Pacific Coastal from Vancouver to San Diego (September 26-September 30) is still listed on the website. And September 30 is the start date of the first of the 3 Mexican Riviera cruises. I would think that 4 day trip would have been removed from the website as well if they are dry docking again (in Portland anyways) right after the Alaska cruise season ends. Just wish we knew one way or the other so we can make alternate vacation plans instead if need be.

Valid point about the location of the dry dock and whether a need would exist for the repo cruise down the coast. Time will tell for sure but I wonder what they're going to do with her for THAT long. I know the Getaway is out of commission for a full ship charter to the 2016 Olympic Games. Is there a major sporting event perhaps in the CA area that would require additional hotel space? I'm just thinking maybe my angle is wrong looking at full ship charters by travel agent operators and it might be a major sporting event to use it like a floating hotel. Just thinking out loud... not saying this is the case. Sleuthing is half the fun... unless you're actually booked on one of the voyages. :(

theloo Posted February 17, 2016 #34 Share Posted February 17, 2016 Does anyone know if NCL is going to do an October dry dock would it also be in Portland? My understanding is that the April dry dock will be in San Francisco. Had you heard that it was going to be in Portland?
SeahawkSiren Posted February 17, 2016 #35 Share Posted February 17, 2016 My understanding is that the April dry dock will be in San Francisco. Had you heard that it was going to be in Portland? Yes, further up in this thread BEAV posted that information including a link to the San Francisco port schedule that shows it going to Portland. I've quoted it here below: I have no idea if the April dry dock changes have anything to do with the Sun's Fall 2016 itineraries, but here's what I do know.... The repo from South America ends in San Francisco on April 29. According to the Port of SF cruise ship schedule (link below), the Sun departs SF on April 29 at 11:00am destined to Portland, Or (for dry docking). The ship "reappears" in San Francisco again on May 8 for an 8-night cruise to Vancouver, where the Alaska season begins from Vancouver on May 16. Note: This 8 night sailing from SF departing May 8 was added around the middle of January, meaning the Portland dry dock was originally going to be longer with the ship's first post-dry dock cruise being the May 16 sailing from Vancouver. http://www.sfport.com/index.aspx?page=2671 Again, I have no idea if the shortened Spring 2016 dry dock has anything to do with the Fall's Mexican Riviera itineraries..... BEAV Posted February 17, 2016 #36 Share Posted February 17, 2016 My understanding is that the April dry dock will be in San Francisco. Had you heard that it was going to be in Portland? The Port of SF cruise ship schedule shows the Sun departing for Portland on April 29 at 11:00am (after disembarking passengers from the repositioning cruise from South America). Further, the site mentions the Pride of America dry dock in SF from Feb 25 to Mar 15, however no listing for the Sun being at the SF facility. http://www.sfport.com/index.aspx?page=2671

California that would require a cruise ship for additional hotels, we live here and would have heard about it Sorry! ;) It is a good mystery though. If one cruise sold out that would be something but all of them selling out, something seems off. The OP was good to bring this up. If there's no major events in San Diego at that time, are there any at a port nearby... like San Francisco or LA which might require a ship? I was surprised when they used the Getaway for the Super Bowl. I thought NYC had plenty of hotel rooms. Now she's going to Rio because they don't have enough space. I recall a few ships were used for the Winter Olympics too. We will get to the bottom of this mystery! :D PS... I'm interested in finding out what's going on with her as I'm considering her repo cruises back down to South America. :)

However, the Sun isn't listed on the Port of SF 2016 calendar in Sept/Oct, so I think we can at least rule that idea out!
Brits 2006 Posted February 18, 2016 #39 Share Posted February 18, 2016 Hi I really hope the cruise is going ahead as we have already booked our flights from the UK we are booked on the 11 October one.
CruisinMaterial Posted February 18, 2016 #40 Share Posted February 18, 2016 I feel really bad for you folks actually booked on these voyages. Yesterday was glowing in communication mess ups from NCL corporate. Cancelling shows without telling people why or what was going on and then an email late in the day from Vivian but to travel partners but nothing to guests. Communication is key to keeping guests happy. I hope NCL communicates with those booked on these sailings if something is amiss and tells you folks sooner rather than later. The shortened dry dock makes me wonder if the ship will really be spruced up enough to consider sailing her down to South America or taking Princess instead. I'm on the fence but prefer NCL for their more casual attire. I do not prefer to drag a suit with me all over the place (like Princess requires). Time will tell... until then... keep sleuthing everyone! :)
hpecorari Posted February 18, 2016 #41 Share Posted February 18, 2016 Just received this e-mail from NCL: NCL 7665 CORPORATE CENTER DRIVE Doral, FL 33126 US IMPORTANT: ITINERARY CHANGE INFORMATION Dear Valued Guests and Travel Partners, Norwegian Cruise Line has important information for you regarding Norwegian Sun's 11-Day Mexican Riviera sailings from San Diego on September 30, 2016, October 11, 2016 and October 22, 2016. All guests booked on these sailings need to be aware of this change and travel professionals are asked to forward this information to their clients. Because of a scheduling change the 11-day Mexican Riviera sailings departing on these dates have been cancelled. Norwegian is offering guests currently booked and fully deposited on these sailings the following options: Option 1: Move to Norwegian Sun's new 14-Day Panama Canal sailing Sept. 30, 2016 from San Diego to Miami or the 14-Day Panama Canal October 14, 2016 from Miami to San Diego and your cruise fare will be protected. Option 2: Select any available 5 day or longer sailing in our fleet from now until September 2017 at the current published fare and your deposit will be applied towards the new sail date. If you choose this option a $50 onboard credit will be applied to your onboard account, which can be used on any expenditure on the ship excluding service charges. If you are currently booked in a suite (categories beginning with S or H) you will receive a $100 per stateroom onboard credit. Norwegian will also cover up to $300 maximum per person air change fees. We look forward to hearing from you by March 2, 2016, so that we can modify your reservation. If we don't hear from you by March 2, 2016, your reservations will be cancelled. We are standing by to assist you on our dedicated support line at (877) 461-1160 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm ET Monday through Friday. hpecorari Posted February 18, 2016 #42 Share Posted February 18, 2016 I've been through the Panama Canal 3 times already and DON'T want to go back there. I want to go to the Mexican Riviera but want a longer cruise and not a 7 or 8 day cruise. I have to look into this but I have GREAT perks, UDP, UBP, FREE GRATS and INTERNET. I don't want to lose the UDP, UBP or the FREE GRATS! Not real happy :( Harriet

Sotermarler Posted February 18, 2016 #45 Share Posted February 18, 2016 Well that stinks. At least they are offering to price protect a cruise leaving on the same day. It might work for some people, but I'm sure not everyone. It's more than the offer I got with the repositioning of the 5 ship mess. My offer was to take the same cruise one year in advance....dumb and $50 is laughable. I hope you all can work it out, I've felt your pain before. Rare firegal2539 Posted February 18, 2016 #46 Share Posted February 18, 2016 I am booked on the 11 day Mexican Riviera from San Diego on October 22, 2016. I have purchased my air, beverage package and finished paying for the cruise with the exception of $100. I got the same email and my cruise was a Casinos at Sea offer. I called immediately the number on the letter and was told I have to talk to CAS, no one else. I got a rep, Colleen, who told me that all I have to do is find another cruise since I don't want to do the Panama Canal and they will transfer everything, including beverage package, transfers, and insurance to the new cruise. They will pay for up to $300 air back to me after I cancel and have proof of the old reservation, and proof of the new air reservation paid for by me. So I spent 2 hours looking for cruises, came up with two and called CAS and they told me that they are not changing any CAS offers until Wednesday of next week. This rep said that they have to notify a supervisor in the CAS department and get approval to take a longer cruise then I originally booked and to pay $300 towards air. This is crap! I am more then angry, mad, whatever you want to call it. I am now going to call and ask for a supervisor, does anyone have a good number to reach someone that can help and bypass the reps that answer the phones. I have googled and all I see are the main numbers. Any help will be appreciated. Candie

Depending on what perks you have now they won't be transferred over to your new cruise UNLESS they are the same perks the new cruise is offering. I was welcomed into the MDR's on formal nights with a long sleeve button shirt and slacks. That is VERY good information. I greatly appreciate it. At least now, sorry to the other posters, I know what's going on with the Sun during the time frame in question and don't have to worry about it being a post dry-dock voyage. Those are rather shaky so I may now really consider NCL for that repo cruise. Thank you for the heads up. I did a Carnival cruise and their formal night was super lax too so I guess it's becoming a thing of the past?

CruisinMaterial Posted February 18, 2016 #50 Share Posted February 18, 2016 Wait a second... if she's doing 14 day itineraries then where is the Norwegian Sun going to be from 10/28 until her repo on 11/2 to South America? There's a schedule gap of 6 days.
