That seems so inexpensive and easy. I guess I'm wondering if you also need to purchase the wifi package in order for it to work.

No....while it uses the ship's wifi, there is no actual wifi access (i.e. emails, Facebook, etc.) You can literally only use iConcierge if you don't want to purchase an internet package.

I don't mean to hijack the thread at all, but can anyone tell me if I can use a ship phone to call an iconcierge app?

Yes you can, also vice versa. The number is is just not as short as the regular onboard phonenumbers.

Interestingly enough, my phone received iMessages when I was hooked to the ship wifi for iconcierge & my phone was in airplane mode. I was able to text my friends back home. A loophole of some sort?

Not a loophole per se, and does not happen regularly. iMessages are always delivered through Apple's server infrastructure and if for example access to iTunes store from the network is enabled for some reason (f.ex. iConcierge updates) then it is possible that iMessages get through also.
