funkqwita Posted February 22, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2016 I was just wondering if they hold a certain amount on the credit cards/debit cards? Also do they still do the midnight chocolate buffet?:)
triptolemus Posted February 22, 2016 #2 Share Posted February 22, 2016 Holds are placed. You would be wise to avoid using a debit card to establish your shipboard account if you are concerned about funds availability. Search the forum for "debit card" -- there are tons of threads on this topic. No, chocolate buffet is history.
bam1957 Posted February 22, 2016 #3 Share Posted February 22, 2016 I used a debit card every time and I didn't have any issues with holds. The first time we cruised they asked what amount we wanted them to hold. The next 2 cruises there we no holds placed on my account. I sailed Breakaway all 3 times. Can I ask how many people were in your room and the amount you had them hold? How did you settle the account in the end - leave it on the card or settle in cash? I dont have a credit card and am debating about using my debit - we will be 3 in the room but settle the account in cash. They want a ridiculous amount for a cash deposit to open the account. bam1957 Posted February 22, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 22, 2016 It was only my husband and I. The last 2 cruises they never held anything and I just left it on my card. But we also prepaid out gratuities, our meals and we had the UBP. This time we did the same thing for our cruise on the 3/4. The first cruise I told them to hold 2000. djny1077 Posted February 23, 2016 #6 Share Posted February 23, 2016 Thats good to know! Thank you! We also have the UBP, pre-paid gratuities and will have some OBC. Can I ask what bank. I wonder if that makes a difference.
funkqwita Posted February 24, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted February 24, 2016 Thanks everyone. I've been on two other cruises before and always did a cash account. I don't have a credit card and did not want to do a cash account just for the simple fact that they want so much $$$ pp.

I was curious about that as well. The only thing I didn't pre pay is the gratuities. But when booking the UBP and dining I paid on those. I don't feel I should have to give thousands to hold when I should only be spending around $300. I can use the cash in the casino!!!:)

If you prepaid tips ,UBP and dining your set just set up a cash account at the credit desk when you board with $ 200 bucks or so.

bam1957 Posted February 24, 2016 #11 Share Posted February 24, 2016 We only did that the first time because when we checked-in the person that waited on us told us that we had to give them an amount to hold on the card. They didn't tell me what amount I told them. I could've said 100 dollars and it would've been fine. I really don't know why I had to do it that time because I didn't on any of my other NCL cruises. It probably was the person that waited on us because my son who was on the same cruise also used a debit card and he was not required to do that.
