workroombee Posted May 10, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 10, 2016 We're booked on this ship in early June. We've enjoyed lots of 7-day cruises to many places, but this will be our first time to try a 5-day. Been following the problems resulting in missed ports, stuck-in-port, problems caused by Liberty to other ships and getting a bit concerned for our upcoming cruise! (And to those adversely impacted already, you have my sympathy) There's another thread that started with reported updates and information but has now become information about the workings of bow thrusters and pilot/captain responsibilities. Interesting, sort of--but what I need/want is actual information about the ongoing changes, ports missed, etc. Extra sea days are not what I am looking for on a cruise of 5 days that already has two sea days. I have some time to change/cancel (and insurance to cover if I do) so I'd like to hear from real-time cruisers what information they have received from Carnival so far, and what upcoming cruisers may know or be planning. I'm not looking to Carnival-bash, or tell anyone they should make lemonade out of lemons, or make judgements on how things are handled, either corporately or personally. I'm just looking for some information and this site has always been a good one for that. But at the moment it is pitifully lacking on Liberty information. shallow1 Posted May 10, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 10, 2016 We are booked on the Liberty(June 27) for our first ever cruise and I am getting a little nervous as well!!!! I know stuff goes wrong or is out of the control of Carnival(weather) but sure seems like Carnival is having more issues with their ships than seems normal!!!!!! Hope you have smooth sailing with your cruise!!
WLHyatt Posted May 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Carnival has lined up tugs to assist docking maneuvers until they can get the thruster fixed. The sailing that left Saturday is the first one to leave after they discovered the issue, so they should be in a port today. I think you need to let the next couple of sailings happen before you decide to cancel.
BrotherCraig Posted May 10, 2016 #4 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Yes, they cancelled Cozumel today because they were stuck in Progreso last night. The thrusters are not working correctly and they had to use tugs. With the high winds in Progreso last night, the decided to stay there and overnight -- cancelling Cozumel. They are on their way back to Galveston at this time and will arrive on schedule. I am with the poster above. I would wait for a couple more weeks to see what happens with future Liberty cruises. They do have tugs reserved at both ports so docking is not an issue without the Thrusters.
Naomi John Posted May 10, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Several people have posted the winds were not more than 7 miles at it's peak. I think they could not get the tugs for Cozumel as planned and made an excuse. I've read about missing ports due to wind, but never out of Progresso. Another person posted on another site the ship hit a tug in Progresso. Yikes. I would follow the boards and other web sites for current information and not a company line. Heck, a bad day at sea is better than a good day in the Office, so I'll take it.
BrotherCraig Posted May 10, 2016 #6 Share Posted May 10, 2016 I have talked to about a dozen different people onboard that ship and they said it was high winds. They could not even walk across the decks it was so windy at times. Taking to a person now, they are at sea, and very rough and windy.

BrotherCraig Posted May 10, 2016 #8 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Also, I have seen ships get stuck in Progreso for high winds. I have seen Progreso get skipping because of high winds. It is more common than you think.
WLHyatt Posted May 10, 2016 #9 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Depending on the orientation of the wind to the ship/dock, I could see a 7 kt crosswind pinning a ship to a pier pretty easily. That is a LOT of surface area.
BrotherCraig Posted May 10, 2016 #10 Share Posted May 10, 2016 The winds were between 17-22 mph at the dock. Heck, right now the winds is over 21 mph in Merida - -which is inland from there. Right now in Progreso, winds are NE 18 mph. (15.6 knots)
redstapler7 Posted May 10, 2016 #11 Share Posted May 10, 2016 We are cruising out on Thursday for a short 4 day on the Liberty. Not sure if I will get an answer or not, but just called our PVP to see if she could get any info on the issue. With our only port of call being Cozumel, I am a bit worried. On the flip side, that may be an extra day for the casino to be open :D:D

poz222 Posted May 10, 2016 #13 Share Posted May 10, 2016 On the plus side, when the do go into Cozumel, I heard they will pull into Porto Langostino, so nice and close to downtown and no taxi needed for shopping (for the "glass half-empty crowd" taxis will be more expensive for beaches).. Not sure if I would cancel yet, if tugs are arranged it should not affect them getting into port.
WLHyatt Posted May 10, 2016 #14 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Of the three docks in Cozumel, Langosta was our favorite!
Sandy Sails Posted May 10, 2016 #15 Share Posted May 10, 2016 This probably isn't helpful at all, but if it were me, I'd try to switch to a different ship - if there's one available. Why take the chance?
Rena921 Posted May 10, 2016 #16 Share Posted May 10, 2016 There is plenty of time for the issue to be fixed. Personally, I would love the extra sea day.

That is a LOT of surface area. ^quoting above for truth. Anyone who doesn't believe this, take a piece of sheet rock or a door and stand w either facing into the wind and the full width of either catching said wind. Now factor into that force the resistance of the ocean and its currents! It does stink that ports are missed (for passengers and those who make their living from tourism), but the only conspiracy afoot is the fact that Nature is far more powerful than Man. medicalma'am Posted May 11, 2016 #19 Share Posted May 11, 2016 (edited) My son and daughter in law are on the Liberty now. They were notified a week before their cruise that their port visits switched and so they went to Progresso first. They could not leave because of 22 knot winds, even with the help of the tugs. They finally left and have been circling in the gulf since and missed Cozumel. This really disappointed them as they were going to tour Tulum. I am sure I will hear all about it when they return to Galveston tomorrow. At least they had a large aft balcony to enjoy the outdoors in solitude. I can only imagine how crazy the lido deck is! workroombee Posted May 11, 2016 Author #20 Share Posted May 11, 2016 medicalma'am, I was excited to see your name on a response to this thread! I followed your review of your February NCL cruise, we cruised a few weeks after you did. I'd really like to hear what your family has to say when they return, please share after you talk with them. Our cruise for this ship is only about 3 weeks away and I have been watching for Liberty reviews (very few) and information (very little) and then the problems began with Liberty's propulsion/thrusters/etc and I thought it would be quickly resolved and no impact on our plans. But now I'm beginning to wonder..... Looking forward to hearing from you again. AND from any other recent Liberty cruisers who can share some thoughts. My hubby and 2 sons will be boarding Liberty tomorrow for the 4 day. They did receive an email from Carnival today stating that they had tugs lined up for them in Coz. Also stated they were good to show up at there check in time selected tomorrow. Will post any news from my family here. Tracie

soontobeemptynesters Posted May 12, 2016 #24 Share Posted May 12, 2016 So far news from my family is that all is going smooth. They were on the ship before 12:00, they had 11:00 to 11:30 check in time. Sent me a picture of their guy's burgers at 12. They did have help to leave port.
