nikicole Posted May 17, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2016 (edited) Is the beach at the end of the 4 mile long pier at Progreso a public one? Can you just hang out on that strip, swim, shop, eat, whatever? Yes, I am aware the water is a bit murky and that's o.k. We will be enjoying the clear blue waters of Cozumel the day before. Besides, that, we've vacationed at Tybee Island, GA and South Carolina before, so it's probably nothing we can't tolerate ;) Thanks in advance! WisRiver Posted May 18, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 18, 2016 The beach at the end of the pier is a free, public beach. The street between the beach and the restaurants and shops is called the Malecon. The restaurants offer beach service their tables and shade on the beach. The further you walk away from the pier the less crowded it will be and there will be fewer vendors. About 4 blocks east of the pier is our favorite place on the Malecon, Flamingos. They have nice clean bathrooms for customers use. We like their food and drink. maldenmusic Posted May 25, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 25, 2016 We have used the public beach before but were constantly being asked to buy things from the vendors. We walked further down the beach and got to a place where we were pretty much left alone.
