ParrotheadG Posted June 2, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 2, 2016 Greetings fellow CC adventurers! Looking for some advice/suggestions/ideas from those of you who may have already taken this trip. We've decided to spend 3 days post cruise in Switzerland. Probably go to Lucerne, and then possibly take the Wilhelm Tell express to Lugano, or take an excursion to the Bernese region. Then fly out of Zurich or Basel. Can anyone offer some thoughts or ideas? Thanks! You guys are the best!

Last summer, after a river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, we took the train from Basel to Zurich, stayed there two nights at the Marriott, and flew back to ATL out of Zurich. We enjoyed Zurich … took a boat trip on Lake Zurich, ate at a great Italian restaurant, and explored the city. Had a fine time! AG
mimmy52 Posted June 2, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 2, 2016 I stayed in Lucerne two nights pre-cruise Basel to Amsterdam. Lucerne is beautiful! It's convenient to Mt. Rigi and Mt. Pilatus too if you wanted to take in the sights from the top of a mountain.
RDC1 Posted June 2, 2016 #4 Share Posted June 2, 2016 (edited) We did a 10 day land tour in Switzerland prior to a Rhine river cruise. Would strongly recommend Lucerne as has been mentioned. Instead of going to Lugano. I would spend go to Interlaken. Then fly out of Zurich. I would go to Interlaken first, then go to Lucerne, then end in Zurich. Also would recommend taking the cog wheel train up Mt Pilatus Edited June 2, 2016 by RDC1
cole Posted June 2, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 2, 2016 Switzerland is an easy country to drive around in, if you are interested in seeing some beautiful scenery. You could take the train from Basel to Zurich, rent a car and drive to a variety of places. Lucerne is about an hour away, the Lake in Zurich is a wonderful excursion and a drive into the Swiss Alps is also an option. Take advantage of your time there. It will be worth it. CPT Trips Posted June 2, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 2, 2016 Zurich may offer better flight options than Basel . . .
ParrotheadG Posted June 2, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted June 2, 2016 Thanks for the tips everyone! We have been to Lucerne but just a very quick overnight visit with a coach tour. We went up Mt. Stansenhorn during that visit. Would certainly like to see more of Lucerne! Any problems with our first day being a Sunday? I've heard most shops are closed. Has anyone been there in October? I know you can never predict what the weather will be like, but overall is it generally ok? Are there "fall colors" like we have in the northeast US? sueajp Posted June 3, 2016 #8 Share Posted June 3, 2016 Our Avalon cruise ended in Basel. Took a cab to the train station and went to Lucerne. Beautiful! We stand right on the river and loved that area. We took the cruise across the lake to Mt. Pilatus and then the cog railway up to the top. On a beautiful day the scenery on the lake is spectacular! Little villages and towns. You can get off the boat at different stops of you wish. We took the train to Zurich and stayed near the airport. Took the tram into town and explored old town. Early flight the next morning with free shuttle to airport.
ParrotheadG Posted June 5, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted June 5, 2016 (edited) Thanks sueajp! Do you recall what company you used for the boat trip on lake Lucerne? Also, the hotel in Zurich? Sounds like it worked out great for you! Edited June 5, 2016 by ParrotheadG
