Viking excursions

Naples, did a Viking tour to Pompeii and then Sorrento. Loved both locations. You need a tour guide in Pompeii to understand what you're seeing. Sorrento is all about scenery & shopping. Go off on your own & just find out where & when to meet the group/bus.

Corfu. We did the boats to the caves in the town that starts with a P. Long Greek name. Loved it. Viking pay tour. Then they took us to Corfu town. Skipped the tour there to see the shops & then eat/drink along the water with a view.

Dubrovnik. Did the cable car. Great view of the city walls. Then to town. Ditched the tour to walk the wall. Exhausting & scary at times but worth it. Also you must check out the two Buza cliff side bars! Try to go to one when the sun is setting.

Venice. We did the trip to Murano (glass works) and Burano (pretty colored houses & lace) then to Venice proper to see the Bridge of Sighs, Dogges Palace, St Mark's Square. If we had more time we would have taken a vaporato around & a gondola ride. Watch The Tourist with Johnny Depp & Angelina Jolie before you go. Then peak in to the Hotel Danieli's lobby where they stayed.

Dark Avenger,

Excellent idea to add to front & back of cruise. We had an extra day in Barcelona & wish we had had a week! With Viking we did the Gaudi architectural tour & the flamingo show at a replica of an old Spanish town. Gaudi was well worth it because it would take a few cab rides to see these sights. The flamingo show was not worth the price. On our own we saw a Spanish guitar with flamingo dancers at the palace of music. Highly recommend this venue. Also toured Gaudi's le pedrera on our own. The Viking tour only drives by this house. The rooftop is amazing. Visit when the sun is setting to see both day & night views.

TravelLynn (and Dark Avenger)

We spent two days in Barcelona postcruise and we also did the flamenco show at the Palau de la Musica. Loved the building and the show! We also did the Gaudi tour with Viking so that gave us extra time while on our own in Barcelona. We really loved wandering along Las Ramblas. The architecture is so beautiful and it was fun to check out La Boqueria, the market, with all its different shops.

Dark Avenger, on our first Viking Oceans cruise, we spent 3 days in Venice postcruise and had a marvelous time. You can see so much in that period of time. It all comes down to your interests.

Becki, agree with all you said. I think I could live in Barcelona! We did la ramblas from start to finish reading a Rick Steves write up about each stop along the way. Yes the market is a must see. We did not get to the Picasso museum or get to the W hotel (must be an amazing view from the top). We also toured the old cathedral & even went on the roof. Wonderful views.

I bought his Mediterranean cruise book. Went through & cut out the sections on all of our ports so I only had to carry small sections at a time. Great minds think alike! Also bought a small Spanish language book that was very helpful when ordering food & in cabs.

I had downloaded the Mediterranean cruise book onto my Nook from our library. We had made great use of his Pocket Paris book when we did a pre cruise there before our Viking Paris and the Heart of Normandy. So, when the new, updated Pocket Barcelona came out just before our cruise, I got that too.

On your Las Ramblas walk, did you see the excavated Roman cemetery?

We spent a few pre-cruise days in Barcelona. We went to Montserrat with Barcelona Day Tours- excellent tour and beautiful drive. Did a Sagrada Familia tour with Context Tours that included the Hospital Pau- not Gaudi, but amazing architecture. Agree that Las Ramblas is a treat as is the market. Walked the Gotic district and loved the narrow twisting streets.

Krisval,

Your exploration of the Gothic district sounds great. We were just out of time before we knew it. Definitely a place I would be happy to return to.

Lynn, When you booked RomeinLimo, did the fee include the driver and a guide, or did you have to find a guide? Or, did they hook up with a guide? We would like to do the Vatican/Museum/St. Marks (guided) and perhaps also the Borghese (on our own) and maybe cull out some of the "drive by / walk by" traditional sites we have already seen.

Perhaps with a few other fellow cruisers.

DA, they recommended a guide at the Vatican & they were right. We let them recommend the guide & he was amazing. Massimo. No guide for anything else. The driver was very knowledgeable & told us all we needed to know. Stefan. If you do it alone (no other couples), I'm sure they'll accommodate anything you want. Once we added the guide, they added that fee. We prepaid all but the tips.
