Grand Bahama Island without an Excursion

I am not overly excited about this port stop.

 

Is there anything to do right at the port, shopping, history, bar or restaurant?

Thinking we might just stay aboard and relax rather than take an excursion which really isn't important to us.

 

Your opinions are appreciated.

The stop in freeport is industrial and spread out and there are only a few bars , shopping and places to eat right at the port. otherwise it is an excursion of a shuttle to lucaya,

Thanks! We are not beach people so we will walk around if we can and then return to the ship.

Walking around the port area would get you off the ship but not much else. A shuttle to the lucaya marketplace would let you see a bit of scenery and walking around the marketplace , hotel, casino and even the beach ( even if you are not spending time there ) wou;d be a reasonable way to spend part of the day.

The shuttle from the port is a mini bus and relatively cheap IMO

Where do you get the shuttle and does it return to port on a frequent schedule. That may be a good solution.

Is there somewhere I can get more information?

the shuttle busses to lucaya are right at the dock and drop you and pick up across the street from lucaya.. they run frequently and it is almost a hop on when you want to come back

We spent a couple of days on the island, so we had the leisure of renting a car. Depending on how long you have in port, consider renting a car and driving to the Lucayan National Park. The beaches there are amazing (no tourists like near the port) and the underwater caves are definitely something to see.

The island and the beaches are very beautiful, but you have to leave the port area to experience it.
