SpokaneDave Posted September 2, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2016 Loved your photos. We will be there in about a month and I have almost the same route as you except in reverse. What time was the train you caught to get you back onboard by 5:30?

euro cruiser Posted September 5, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 5, 2016 We have been there before and want to go first to the coliseum to spend time there then maybe the city hall to see guards, and pantheon. This is easy to lay out and it's helpful to others if you lay it out here, so others can learn along with you. One note, the guards are not at city hall (which is at Campidoglio) but at Quirinale Palace. They no longer do the ceremonial changing of the guard every day, it's now only on Sundays. As April 17, 2017 is a Monday there won't be an event to see. It's also important to note that state owned museums will be closed on a Monday. The Colosseum will be open, however. If you want to start your day there the most direct route is to get off the train at Roma Ostiense and switch to the metro right to the Colosseum stop. Are you up for some walking or do you want to use public transit to get from the Colosseum to your next stop?
euro cruiser Posted September 5, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 5, 2016 By the way, I just took a quick look at the pictures in the OP's blog and the picture with the guards is not city hall. If the pictures are in walking order coming from the Vatican it's likely Palazzo Madama, the senate building.

Viv0828 Posted September 5, 2016 #9 Share Posted September 5, 2016 (edited) Just a reminder, if you plan on visiting the Vatican or the colosseum, you can book tickets online before you leave to avoid the long lines. euro cruiser Posted September 6, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 6, 2016 Thank you euro cruiser, we are up for walking from the colosseum can we get to pantheon easily from there., Where do we catch train from Rome to get back to the port? Your info was very helpful how far is it to see the guards wherever they are? If you are ending your day in the middle of town you can choose either Trastevere or S. Pietro for the return, but Trastevere is probably easier to access. From the Pantheon continue west along the pedestrian pathway (Via Giustiniani/Via del Salvatore toward Piazza Navona. Just before crossing Corso del Rinascimento Palazzo Madama will be on your left, that's where the picture of the guards was taken. From there to get to the Trastevere station walk back toward the Pantheon, at the Pantheon turn right and walk south along Via di Torre Argentina. Cross the main street (Corso Vittorio Emanuele) and continue straight along Via di Torre Argentina until you come to the tram station Arenula-Cairoli (about a block and a half). Take the #8 tram from there right to the Trastevere train station.
