As elite and being one of the most travelled we were dining with the doctor on board for the Elite luncheon. He told us the biggest mistake people make when cruising is not buying insurance. He also told us when he picks up the phone and call for air evacuation lift it is $50,000.00 as soon as he makes the call. Make sure you are correctly insured.

We have used TravelGuard for trip insurance on most of our cruises. They have much higher limits than the cruise line policies. If you happen to book your cruise thru a certain big-box warehouse chain, they have a link to TG that provides an even better value.

I usually comparison shop at quotewrite.com. Pre-existing conditions is an issue for me. I also usually get much better coverage for a smaller premium than with the cruise line. The insurance is worth it for the piece of mind.

When you are shopping for external insurance, know that some providers allow for pre-existing conditions (as opposed to cruise line insurance). For instance, the one I usually use includes them if you book the insurance within 10 days of your cruise reservation date. (I'm not sure I can mention them here, but their name is spelled similar to "alliance" and has a "z" in it. :p )
