Advice for picking out a camera

Hello Cruise Critic!

I'm trying to pick out a camera and having a very difficult time. I've done some preliminary research, but still can't decide. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good Point and Shoot for a beginner? I would primarily be interested in taking pictures of scenery and people. I'm looking at a maximum $500 price range. Again, I'm just a beginner. Thanks!

I used to be seriously into cameras. back in 35 mm film days.

now have a Sony DSC H400

has an amazing 63 times optical zoom and 20 megapixel

probably under $300 in the US.

got a couple of spare lithium batteries cheap online. all you really need for normal photography and no longer carry 50 pounds of gear
