SailBadtheSinner Posted October 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2016 What is the date of your visit to Newport? IMO, seeing the Newport mansions is DIY. Most of the popular mansions are located on or near Bellevue Ave. Most of the popular mansions are located on the same bus route. The most popular mansion is the Breakers. It is less than ¾ mile to the next mansion, Rosecliff, and about ¼ mile further to Marble House. The distance from the tender dock to the Breakers is about 2.0 miles. The distance from the Breakers to the last mansion on Bellevue Ave is about 1.3 miles. How many mansions do you think you can do? The bus terminal is located one block north from the tender dock. Are you planning walking Cliff Walk which is a partially paved walkway on the seaside of the mansions? SBtS
trophy_23 Posted October 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 10, 2016 Both times we did it ourselves by transit and it was really easy. No tour needed IMO. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
r3boyz Posted October 11, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 11, 2016 We did the Breaker's and the Elms Mansions in about 4 hours including walking between them. Make sure you book your Servant's tour at the Elms Mansion in advance. It is a great tour unlike the others, and sells out quickly. You can tour the Elms Mansion before or afterwards. srpilo Posted October 16, 2016 #5 Share Posted October 16, 2016 If you're up to it ... :) We rented bikes and did the entire mansion loop in about 4 hours which included about 45 minutes at the Breakers.. You can rent bikes right across the street from the tender dock. No reservations need Srpilo

Would you remember the name of the bike rental place?
Giantfan13 Posted October 21, 2016 #7 Share Posted October 21, 2016 can anyone recommend a good company or excursion to see the Newport mansions? As has been said, seeing the Mansions requires no high priced tour. After you tender in, go over a few blocks to the Visitors Center and they will give you maps, and all the info you could ever want about the mansions, any tours that you 'might' want to do and best of all, they will show you how to easily get there and do whatever you want to do at a fraction of the cost of any ships excursion. The are around the mansions is very ease to get around if you are able to walk, say, a mile. AND do go out onto the Cliff Walk to get a great rear view of the mansions and the coastline. 2cruiseagain Posted October 24, 2016 #8 Share Posted October 24, 2016 We used Uber when we were there last week. About $8 each way for the two of us in a private car.

Hey fellow Houstonian....Was there any issues with UBER. Quick to respond? We are on an early arrival and we have plans for a sail in the afternoon so we wanted to do Cliff Walk and see the Breakers in the morning... Doable? or Pipe dream? Never have used Uber but have heard many things. We too are just 2. Any feedback appreciated...
RocklandCruiser Posted April 16, 2017 #10 Share Posted April 16, 2017 OP, if you want to use a tour I would recommend Viking tours of Newport. Very easy - just go to the visitors' center which is 1 block from where the tenders drop you off to meet your trolley. http://vikingtoursnewport.com/sightseeing/
