My husband and I traveled with our 11 year old daughter and 11 other people (ages from 11 to close to 70) Five staterooms between us (3 balconies on deck 9 and two insides on deck 5) We were in category BB, in stateroom 9854. We drove from southern NH to the cruise terminal, left NH at about 8am and got to the ship around noon.

UBP – We got this free as part of booking. In my opinion, with the service fee of $199 for my husband and myself, it was well worth the cost of that. My bar tabs have been WAY more than that on past cruises. I never had to sign a slip, just swipe and go. I felt they were pretty lenient with who is using it at times - We wanted to buy my husband’s cousin and fiancée a drink at dinner to celebrate their engagement (they didn’t have the UBP) so we asked our waiter to charge us for their drink and he just used our card (for two rounds). Our nephew and GF had it as well, and regularly bought for his parents. No real issues at all that I can remember, other than at Shaker’s. Not really a “problem”, but I saw a great looking drink and asked if they could sub the super premium vodka with a different vodka so I could try it with the UDP (it was closer to $20, I think), and they said no. Some of my new favorite drinks – the Dale (available at the Spice H2O bar) and the Moscow Mule (could get that anywhere). I love to try new drinks, but once I find one I love, it’s hard to get me to switch up. Having the UBP made it so much easier, knowing I wasn’t wasting my money on something I wouldn’t end up drinking. Anyone, those two dominated my orders that week. Some other good ones I tried that week - the mai tai (yum), the Rebellious Fish, the Mr Worldwide, the mojito, all good … the few I didn’t like as much were at Shaker’s … the Aviation, the Basil Cucumber and the French Raspberry (all just “eh”). There were a few more that I liked that have slipped my mind (one at Maltings, for example), maybe I’ll pop in later and add if I remember.

UDP – Also free (well, $25 charge) with booking. We used it at:

Wasabi - went twice and paid OOP once, both times good. Had the Rock & Roll and the Crispy Rice, and the Gyu. Everything was good. My husband got other items and enjoyed them as well.

Teppanaki -no complaints. They offer you a photo with the chef for purchase when you eat there, I wasn’t aware of that. Food was all good, and the one drink I had was fine (the Wasabi cocktail), if not a little too sweet for me. Chef was entertaining, but skipped a few things I normally see at other hibachi restaurants we’ve been to. But he was much more skilled.

Margaritaville - got the Cheeseburger in Paradise, my first real burger in almost a year, and it was worth the wait. Drink I got was called the Hot, Hot, Hot and EXCELLENT. I liked that little spicy kick at the end. I couldn’t drink them all night, but I enjoyed the two I did get. Conch Fritters were really good too (not as good as those I had for the first time, freshly made on a beach in Nassau years ago, but better than the ones offered in Taste on the first night of this trip.

Cirque Dreams - the show was altered due to the waves making parts unsafe for the performers, so we were fully refunded and still got dinner and a slightly adjusted show. First time, so nothing to compare it to, but we were pleasantly surprised with how much we got to see.

...

O’Sheehan’s – can get crowded, but I always managed to find a seat if I was patient enough. Sat in both the bar area and the dining room area. The shepard’s pie was good, also had a black and blue burger (very greasy – to the point that it was dripping down my arm) and had breakfast there one day as well. I liked how there was the viewing area up and over the atrium – if there were an easier way to access those spots from down in the atrium, I’d have counted those in the seating options for the Atrium, but there wasn’t really.

Taste/Savor – interchangeable, in my opinion. We ate at both, but can’t remember which is which. Across the hallway from each other, slightly varying décor, but everything else was similar or the same.

Manhattan Room – we really liked it here. The live music was a big sell for us going back more than once. The second time we had asked a waitress if there was going to be music, she said she’d check and suddenly there was a piano being played. Atmosphere was great.

Fat Cats – always packed. Great music, awful service. Went twice and never had a waiter come to our table either time. I saw several people leave and come back with drinks, probably popped over to Shaker’s? Family karaoke – my daughter wants to request some Coldplay on the options for next time :)

Going to break this up into 2-3 parts, posting ...

Continued:

Casino – I agree with others that say it’s REALLY smoky (I used to smoke and when I’m drinking I still like the smell, but this was a bit much). I did NOT smell it from anywhere else … I think someone said they were able to smell it on the other floors near the stairs. Wasn’t the case for me. Kids can walk through but can’t stay. Found that out the hard way LOL (They just asked me to take them out – we were waiting for my husband to finish his blackjack game to go to dinner … wasn’t an issue though)

Room steward – awful. Worst we’ve had in all of our cruises – He never introduced himself, I had to chase him down and ask for towels, and then when we returned from the beach and left the wet, sandy towels on the floor (as the sign instructs when we want them to be taken and cleaned) he hung them up on the hooks by the door. My alcohol purchased in Bermuda wasn’t brought to my room until I called – twice the night before, and once again in the morning right before we had to leave the ship) He had said he just took over for the girl who should have been our steward. Also had to ask him on the first day to put the bottle of Aquafina in our room (if he hadn’t, they would have charged us for it not being there at the end of the trip) He did nothing but make the bed each day (and the sofa was ALWAYS made up as a bed, never converted back to the sofa).

Service – I had no issue with service anywhere, other than being passed by a few times by bartenders at the atrium bar.

Kids – I saw only one incident with a bratty child and it was at Horseshoe Beach on Wednesday – very well could have been someone not on our ship. And from what I could see, the behavior was a direct result of the parenting, or lack of.

Adults – I was next to a grown woman who, when receiving her Corona with Lime at the Spice H2o bar during sail-away, screamed at the bartender “LEMON!” Not, “could I get a lemon instead please?” or “I’m sorry, I asked for a lemon” … nope, she literally BARKED the word, like giving orders. I actually turned to her and said “Wow.” That bar was chaos (who only puts one bar in an area where they have major events almost every night?) and those bartenders were busting their @sses. No need for that at all. There was also a fight at the pool bar because some ridiculous adult was trying to buy for someone underaged and was told no. I believe it turned physical (but that info was from my SIL, who is a known exaggerator, so I wouldn’t bet on that)

Pool – the family pool seems like a dumpster in a back alley – small, boxy, no atmosphere, an afterthought. My MIL couldn’t join her grandkids in it because it was a ladder entry only without even a real place to sit and put your feet in, water was down too low. Adult pool is overcrowded, even on this non-sold-out sailing in mid-fall – that’s where the main entertainment is too, which means that there is no way for families to sit and watch a band and swim together. I think it’s ridiculous that a ship THAT big has two tiny pools. I was on the Jewel and I seem to remember three pools? And that was a small ship. Another bad design choice.

Ropes course – my daughter and nephew loved this area, walked the plank, climbed in that multi-tiered bungeed contraption and loved it all. No purses or phones allowed, so when they went alone once they had to leave their items unattended.

Navigating the ship – I wish there had been more ship maps around, not just at the elevators. Sometimes I’d start walking towards one end of the ship, but realized I was walking in the wrong direction. Maybe those little carpet fish need to be everywhere ..

iConcierge – WELL worth the money, especially if you have kids who will be off on their own at times. It’s $9.95 per DEVICE (not per stateroom, as I assumed) and for communicating it’s PRICELESS. As far as the activities listed on it, eh … they differed on app and printout, and there were a lot of typos on it, which irked me for some reason.

Weather – Sailaway out of NYC was great, warm even. First sea day was nice enough to get some sun on the outside decks and it just got even warmer on the second sea day. The first day in Bermuda it was overcast for the most part, but warm and cleared up for us to get some sun. Day 2 was windy and rainy, but not cold. Day 3 was humid. On Saturday (on the ship) it was rocky and windy, so much so that they closed down outside areas. Not just the pool, but the decks as well.

Spa – My husband bought the week spa pass and enjoyed every minute of it. He loved the therapy pool (he hurt his ankle walking one day and said that it was a big help to have). If anyone has other specific questions on that pass or those areas, I can ask him. We also got massages on Saturday morning (when the ship was rocking like crazy) but it wasn’t bad, even in the front of the ship. My husband enjoyed his massage, mine was a little too rough, despite me asking her to ease up. She was like a little ninja, I underestimated her because of her size. (That happened to me in Disney back in February too, I won’t do that again! Size =/= strength! :) ) Other than that, I could hear banging, from the gym maybe? Another design error - who puts a gym above massage rooms? Or even near them, for that matter.

Entertainment – Burn the Floor was better than I expected. I think if you’re a fan of dance or musicals, you’ll like it. We booked Rock of Ages but missed it both times. I went to see Second City twice – the first one was the 11pm adult show called “Scriptless” and it was so bad that I left after 15 minutes. The second was at 9pm and called “Game night” and SO much better. For those on this sailing, I was the one in the front who gave the answer “Miley Cyrus” and was reprimanded for helping them. My reply was “I thought we were on the same team!” :) Oh well.

Buffet – always found a seat, didn’t go much though. Lots of breakfast choices. A bit of a free-for-all. I had no issues with the area or the offerings (but again, only went one night for dinner and lunch on the first day since we got on board later than usual … 2 breakfasts there were fine)

Atrium – too small to accommodate, especially on Saturday when they closed the outdoor areas and people had no choice but to be inside. Rarely enough seating. Once I put my book on a free chair, turned and walked the 5 steps to the bar, ordered my drink and a woman took my book off my seat and sat down. When I called her on it, she fought me until the woman in the next chair defended my stance, but I was so annoyed at the balls of this woman that I said “you know what, go ahead and take it” and turned back to the bar with my book. She seemed to be confused by this, got up to tell me I could have it back, but by then I was in a bar seat and said “no really, you need it and I have one now, go ahead.” She sat for THREE MINUTES and then left. By the time I realized she was leaving, someone else grabbed it.

Stateroom – pretty much the same as others I’ve had. My mistake this trip was booking on the starboard side – every other trip was port side, so when I left my room and turned left, I assumed I was headed to the front of the ship :) Had to ask my 11 year old for directions … I never got my bearings and figured out where everything was. Also, I’m not one to insist on bringing my own shampoo/conditioner, but I didn’t like what was in the bathroom. You can see the two separating in the container, with the shampoo floating to the top – which pretty much means I conditioned my dirty hair all week. Space was enough for the three of us, suitcases went under the bed, used one to hold dirty laundry as the week went on. My daughter used the shelves near the TV, and my husband and I split the closet. Our balcony was above the “roof” of the Waterfront area, so we didn’t have a view straight down.

Bermuda - Day 1 was overcast and we got a bit of a late start. Bought the 2 day transportation pass and went to Horseshoe Beach via the bus. I was fine with it, although it was crowded and they drove like a lunatic. (And my father was a Boston cab driver for 4 decades, so I am familiar with crazy drivers, but this was legit insane.) There were 7 of us, and none of us wanted to get on it again, so we ended up paying a mini-bus driver to take us back. Anyway, the weather cleared a bit and we did get some sun. I can see why people like that beach, there was something for everyone. I climbed to the top of that rock with my daughter and nephew, beautiful view. Got scratched up on the way back down, but I did in the water as well (trying to swim close to the rocks on the “baby” side – the waves were too crazy! We got food there – fish & chips, chicken, Caesar wrap, fries and rum swizzles. Everything was good, but I was so full after that I napped a bit. The only thing that could have made it better was if it were hotter :)

Day 2 - We had a pontoon boat rented, but the day before saw news of rain so we canceled it. Good thing too, because when we got off the ship, the wind was SO bad that my husband (who has been driving pontoons since he was a teenager) said he wouldn’t have felt comfortable trying to control it on the ocean. We decided to have the driver from the day before take us on a tour and go to the caves. He took us to a lighthouse and then another lookout point, then to the caves. Really cool for a first time visitor (and my husband is really into that stuff) but I can see why folks go and never go back. You see it once and you’re done. We went over to Blue Hole Park as well but it started raining so we didn’t get much time to explore. From there he dropped us off in Hamilton and we went to the Pickled Onion for lunch. My ONLY issue with this restaurant (food was SO SO SO good!) was that they advertised a drink that was served in a cup you could keep (drink and shots, both – I ordered one of each) and then after they showed I was charged extra for the glass. It was a bit of false advertising, I didn’t care for the glass, especially if I knew it cost money. I don’t need any more glasses, I ordered it for the drink and not the glass. Anyway, not a huge deal, but thought I’d warn others in case they go.) The food was excellent – I got the fish chowder and the tequila coconut shrimp on Soba Noodles, my husband got avocado egg rolls and tacos. Our daughter got a kids meal, chicken probably. We took the ferry back (smooth ride! Easier than the bus! LOL ).

Day 3 – my husband went off to Elbow Beach and my daughter and I shopped at the Dockyard. Bought some gifts at the glass and rum shops, went to the Clocktower Mall, and then went back to the ship. It was humid this day, and I noticed that Calico Jack’s was open only after I was back on board and changed – it was too close to departure for me to go jump.

Kids Club – neither my daughter nor nephew cared for it. To be fair, she never cared for kids clubs, although had the best time in the Carnival club. But she loved being treated like a responsible kid and allowed to stay in the cabin alone, go explore with her cousin (12) and not be forced to go. They went once and texted us that they were bored and starving and wanted to leave. They never went back.

I think that’s all … I’m sure there is more that I’m just forgetting, in which case I’ll come back and add. Any questions, feel free to ask as well.

I as well was on this sailing in the haven.i too seen tail end of the scuffle talk about underage drinking and got the rest of the story from the haven cause the underage girl was from haven. So apparently the girl hit a woman up for a drink and the womarealizes the girl was underage and said no than found the girls mother to say something to and when the mother questioned the daughter the daughter there a complete stranger under the bus for forcing liquor on her. In the end the woman that told mother and mother said sorry to each other and the random person the daughter tried to blame after 6 ncl rent a cops and ships officer later .so your sil wasn't to off . Southern nh here as well left 5 am at pier by 9am

HI

Nice review I liked how you broke it up into sections. You mentioned caves can you tell me where they are? thanks

i think you mean the bigger caves but i wanted to note for others about the caves in the jungle. if you are at the entrance near the gas station and the causeway you get to the caves there pretty quickly. i know i left a lot of the jungle unexplored as i never got near the tavern but couldnt see where the trail was. perhaps damaged by the storm or i wasnt adventurous enough.

but the few i saw near that end were very cool. bring a super bright flashlight if you are interested. and have fun jumping off the cliff. there are bolts sticking out of the jumping off point presumably for a diving board

HI,

Now I recall the large caverns that give tours.(crystal and fantasy) However the little caves you mention are they in blue hole park? or blue hole hill park? those are the two I looked at the map when I googled them.

i'm pretty sure thats the official name. just find the swizzle in and grotto bay resort. the gas station is next to the resort and across the street is the parking lot for the jungle.

Nice review, thank you. I only wish you wouldn't have mentioned the waiters getting extra drinks on the udp. Someone on here is gonna assume it's normal and ncl corporate will soon crack down on the servers.

They are more than halfway to the other side of the island. Maybe about 35-40 minute drive? The tour itself was about 25 minutes but we only saw the Crystal Caves and not the Fantasy Caves (high tide prevented them from being viewed)

Thanks for filling me in! My SIL was up on the deck above, so I was wary on believing her - wondered how she could know this info from way up there :)
