Sandi07054 Posted November 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2016 Was wondering what others do about cell phone use when they out of the country. Does anyone use whatsapp? Will be on msc splendida in a few weeks. Would like to use my phone in rome and in ports. I just checked international calling plans with verizon. 10.00 per day only if you use it or 40.00 for the month. Msc splendida was not on Verizon's list so I guess I can't use it on the ship
luvschessnut Posted November 26, 2016 #2 Share Posted November 26, 2016 WhatsApp is great - use it anywhere there is free wifi. Would like an even better solution, but for free, this is how we've managed. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
CruiseLovininIL Posted November 26, 2016 #3 Share Posted November 26, 2016 That's good to know. I've never heard of WhatsApp. Just read up on it and looks like it just has to work off wifi. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
chinita415 Posted November 27, 2016 #4 Share Posted November 27, 2016 (edited) Yes we used Whatsapp on our RCCL trip last January. MSC has pretty decent wifi packages that has has the social apps only without voice or video. You can text on Whatsapp if you get the cheapest Wifi package. We too have Verizon and are probably going to do the $10 per day for one of our phones while in town. We did that in Mexico in March and it worked well - though was less than $10 per day. I didn't check rates for the month. For the $10 per day - you just add to your data limit to your US plan. Is that the same for the per month? Might be worthwhile for us as we will be in London and Rome pre and post cruise. Edited November 27, 2016 by chinita415

chinita415 Posted November 27, 2016 #6 Share Posted November 27, 2016 Your on vacation, disconnect. Have done so when we were on cruises the Galapagos and Great Barrier Reef. But for Europe with such ports intensive itinerary, I want to have access for train schedule etc as we are doing DIY at each place.
Sandi07054 Posted November 27, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted November 27, 2016 Thanks everyone. I so appreciate the help I agree on vacation but this is my first time out of the country without my husband so he does want me connected. I think the verizon monthly is a tad different than the daily rate. I don't know how to add a pic or I would have shown you the info from the website. I'm still thinking about which plan. chinita415 Posted November 27, 2016 #8 Share Posted November 27, 2016 It's ok Sandi I can look on Verizon. How many days are you gone? I will look at the monthly plan now. You can add a photo screenshot by selecting the paperclip icon. You have to open a tab if on the app.
chinita415 Posted November 27, 2016 #9 Share Posted November 27, 2016 Ok the $40 is for 100 min, 100 text, and 100mb. Not very much data at all. You really have to manage your data. I think we used that in Australia and NZ for emergency only.

chinita415 Posted November 27, 2016 #11 Share Posted November 27, 2016 What are going to do on your phone? When we used the $40 plan, there is a way to keep track of data use on the phone. And if you want to use it on the ship, you have to do it while in port or buy their wifi package.
ssmea03 Posted November 28, 2016 #12 Share Posted November 28, 2016 There's lots of free wifi all over Italy, municipal wifi and the such. Also double check your phone is compatible with European networks, less of an issue than in the past but best to be sure.
