Sixtytwo Posted December 29, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 29, 2016 It is less than 3 miles from the port to the Amtrack station in New Orleans. I have no doubt you can grab a cab at the port and be at the train station within a few minutes. You could also use Uber, probably cheaper and just as quick. If you decide to stay over in NOLA, I think you will find some exceptional food options and interesting sights in the Quarter. Try the St. Charles trolley to get a tour of some of the really nice old NOLA homes. Just use caution if walking around as NOLA has a bad reputation for street crimes. If you are traveling solo, I would just go straight to the train and forget the sights! :(
Bankshot Posted January 1, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 1, 2017 Enjoy New Orleans, it's a one-of-a-kind quirky city. You should be safe most anywhere during the day and in the heart of the Quarter during the early evening. Most crimes happen late at night with people walking through dimly lighted streets when leaving Bourbon Street. Stay on Bourbon or just a block away. Don't miss Felix, Acme Oyster House, Mother's, Bon Ton and the Napoleon House and café De'umond.
SuiteTraveler Posted January 1, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 1, 2017 (edited) I just hosted my Aussie SIL in NOLA - we had a great time. I took her to JW Finn's (outstanding), Antoine's, Brennan's, Cafe du'Monde, August Restaurant, shopping along Royal and Decatur streets, the French Market and also on a day trip out to see Oak Alley Plantation - there is a car rental place near the French Quarter we just walked to and picked up our pre-reserved car. Use your smart phone for navigation - so simple! We also went to Mardi Gras World. We stayed at The Saint Hotel - we chose it because it was less expensive but as nice as most hotels in the area and close to the French Quarter - mostly we walked everywhere taking taxis and pedi-cabs in between. Taxis are safe, plentiful and easy to get in NOLA. Uber is also a good option. If you have trouble finding a taxi, walk to any hotel and get one there - there are so many hotels, it won't take long to get to a hotel. At Mardi Gras World, we had trouble getting a taxi, so we took the Mardi Gras World bus to their stop near Harrah's (included with your admission to Mardi Gras World) and then walked to Harrah's and after a stop through the casino to play slots, took a taxi back to our hotel. Do make reservations for restaurants you want to experience. There is an Ap called Open Table and that is best for making the reservations - and easy to use.
