SonomaMist Posted January 10, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) Does anyone know if the Norwegian Jewel uses the new or old locks during the Panama Canal full transit? Whoops, hit that too soon. Thanks! Edited January 10, 2017 by SonomaMist
Cuizer2 Posted January 10, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2017 Does anyone know if the Norwegian Jewel uses the new or old locks during the Panama Canal full transit? Whoops, hit that too soon. Thanks! It cost more to go through the new locks. Thus any ship that can fit in the old locks is going to use the old locks. The Jewel and Pearl are the same size (more of less) and the Pearl used the old locks in December 2016.
Rare www3traveler Posted January 10, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2017 As currently scheduled Norwegian ship to use the "new" Panama Canal will be The Bliss in the Spring of 2018. I shudder to think what that is going to cost.

Rare www3traveler Posted January 10, 2017 #5 Share Posted January 10, 2017 Thanks for the responses! It will be a very fun cruise and will probably sell out quickly after the bookings for The Bliss open. I can not wait for this cruise.

I shudder to think what that is going to cost. $148 per passenger berth vs $138ppb (old locks) plus a few other significant fees such as $35,000 for the reservation on a day certain and $30,000 for daylight transit guarantee. Those last two figures are the same for either sets of locks. While the total figure will be higher in the new locks, keep in mind that larger figure is spread over quite a few more passengers so the overall cost per passenger will not be a lot higher than a ship using the old locks. Boschmann Posted January 10, 2017 #7 Share Posted January 10, 2017 Does anyone know if the Norwegian Jewel uses the new or old locks during the Panama Canal full transit? The Jewel used the old locks on December 13th. I only saw one ship using the new locks.

Not exactly a small sum as far as the cruise line is concerned. Edited January 10, 2017 by Cuizer2
BillB48 Posted January 10, 2017 #9 Share Posted January 10, 2017 $10 per person for 2,300 people is $230,000. Not exactly a small sum. Think you have an extra zero... ;):D You are correct about which locks the Pearl will use. Ships that can fit in the old locks will continue to use them instead of the new locks, unless there is some special circumstance. Although the Canal is not even accepting cruise ships at the new locks until this April, the Canal is not real eager to open up space at the new locks for a ship than can negotiate the old locks. Even though they could ding the customer an extra 10 bucks per passenger berth it would not make up the difference in what they could charge a container ship that can't use the old locks. The last time I was on The Pearl for a Panama Crossing in 2011, it was $630,00 for the Crossing. If I remember what the Staff Captain said, it is a very complicated formula. It is ONE figure based on the height, width and depth of the ship added to a figure per staff member plus a figure per passenger. Add the 3 totals together. My guess for The Bliss will be close to ONE MILLION US DOLLARS.

Can they use EZ Pass and get a discount?
