Exploring Cuba on your own

Question for those who have experienced the port area and beyond exploring on your own--In some ports we've been to (Jamaica comes to mind) we've sometimes felt overwhelmed by the number of people constantly approaching to braid hair, sell items, etc. How is Cuba in this regard?

There are people who live on commissions from bringing you the tourist to a certain shop, restaurant, or B&B. And there are "working" women. The term is jinetero or jinetera. Learn to say a firm "NO" and keep walking. They usually do not persist to an extreme point.

As far as people selling items/souvenirs, I did not find that happening, even at the beach.

No problem....just use common sense as you would anywhere else. If you hire a bicycle taxi, he'll be your guide and escort everywhere. Great way to see the city sights! The Cuban people are very friendly and helpful.
