Anyone any idea of how long before cruise we find out what cabin we have

It could be anytime up to your sailing date. No real way to tell exactly when it will be.

Everyone is different, it seems. It can be anytime; we got out cabin assignment before final payment (about 5 mo. out). Others report finding out 2 days before or even at the pier. With the new bidding for upsell system coming in, I suspect that you will get your assignment early enough so that you can bid up to 2 categories higher and spend more money.

I have a Cabin Guarantee for the April 23rd cruise on The Jewel and received my assignment a few days ago.

On our last NCL cruise (Pride of America) we booked two GTY balconies over the phone with Cruise.com, but asked nicely if they could be close together or neighbors. Well I was pleasantly surprised when two neighboring cabins were allocated the next day, some two months ahead of the cruise. And they were good cabins - no obstructed view etc.
