Has anyone gone to Haines while in port in Skagway without a ships tour to the Kroschel Wildlife Sanctuary? In speaking with the sanctuary they say we can rent a car at a local hotel and drive to the sanctuary. We are a family of 6 which includes 2 children.

We have taken the fast ferry over to Haines and rented a car there a few times, but have never gone to the Kroschel Wildlife Sanctuary.

We like to return to Skagway on the last ferry of the day, so what we (and others) do is check with Shore Excursions to see if they have a ship's tour returning on that last ferry. They usually do.

 

Then we book the ferry independently, having peace of mind knowing that the ship will wait if the ferry is late, (although it was never late returning to Skagway the times when we did it).

 

 

Maybe we are overly cautious, but whenever we do anything independently we also find out what backup options are available for catching up with the ship at the next port........just in case.

But in all our years of cruising, we have never needed to use one yet.

Planning on doing it on our own on the southbound cruise the week before you. I bought fast ferry tix(round trip) on line, rented a car to drive to the sanctuary and then we'll do the reverse. We are taking a private tour, which is a bit more money but will be a more personal experience. Celebrity offers an excursion but we don't want to be herded around in a group.

I spoke with the cruise line and they are not offering that trip to the wildlife sanctuary only to the city of Hanines.
