All This Flooding - Wonder if will impact the Dream

With all of this rain in the Midwest and all of the flooding wondering if this will impact any of the next upcoming cruises outta of New Orleans. All that flood water will eventually make its way to the gulf.

 

Just curious what do they do...move the dream to mobile...what about people that have flights or are driving..do they go to mobile directly go to new orleans and be bussed.

 

Just curious on what they do about that and when they make decisions would think it would be done here quickly.

Most of All that water making its way to the Gulf will be in the river, but it takes a while. Water level has no affect on the ship, only makes it higher relative to the dock. Boarding ramps are adjustable. No worries.

Once upon a time, I believe it was the Conquest that was in NOLA, the river level got too high for Conquest to pass under power lines that crossed the river. It was diverted to Gulfport, Mississippi for a couple of cruises to let the river level come down. Maybe the power line issue has been resolved and this is no longer a consideration, but it once was!

From past issuse I have read about if something happens and the ship has to be diverted to a different port, Carnival will shuttle you from your original port to where the ship is docked.

Interesting about the power lines, I was thinking about bridges but I guess it doesn't go under any on its way to the port of New Orleans.

We were on one of those Conquest cruises. We were supposed to leave out of New Orleans but the ship (smoke stacks and whale tail) could not make it under the large power lines. We still traveled to New Orleans and Carnival bused us to Biloxi. We checked in for our cruise in a Chiquita banana warehouse. Carnival handled everything very well - from communication before the cruise to the actual day of embarkation. That large power line has now been buried under the river, so this is no longer an issue when the Mississippi River is at a higher water level.

The power lines are now buried under the river. And the bridge right next to where the boat docks, the Crescent City Connection, is the southern-most bridge on the river (for now - there has always been talk of another bridge).

 

While there are no above-head obstacles to worry about, if the water in the river gets super high, sometimes tugs will break free, boats will sink, etc. Those issues could cause the river to close during high water events. Closing the river for only a few hours will cause massive "traffic jams" that can take a while - like a day or so - to resolve.

 

The backup port is Mobile. This is provided the boat in Mobile is not in port. If that port is unavailable, they generally go to Biloxi.

 

If they have to do a port switch, Carnival provides busses for that.

Shouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't worry about it until there is something to worry about. Fantasy calls on Mobile on Mon, Thur and Sat. Dream ports on Sun, so Mobile is an option, but very unlikely to be a problem.

That was many years ago. The power lines that used to cross over the Mississippi River at Chalmette to Algiers have been relocated under the river before the Dream came to New Orleans. This was a condition of getting the larger ships to dock in New Orleans. You will still notice the two large towers that held the power lines on either side of the river. These are just before the Chalmette Ferry crossing on your way down river when you leave the port of New Orleans on your cruise.
