lawgeek Posted July 3, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 3, 2017 I just popped on the Juneau webcam and saw Solstice already docked. This is usually a 1-1:30 call. Anyone on board with an explanation for early arrival? She is typically last of four to arrive, today she is second. Still ended up on AJ dock though (lol). happymom52003 Posted July 3, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 3, 2017 I saw someone who is onboard post on facebook that there was too much ice to get up Tracy Arm, so they went to Juneau early.
SevenSeas1492 Posted July 4, 2017 #3 Share Posted July 4, 2017 Yes, it was because of MUCH ice. I am on the Solstice right now, and they turned around the ship, and we arrived in Juneau early. Brent Nixon was narrating and said it has been a very long time since the ice was that bad. I haven't heard any of the passengers complain, because safety was the top priority, as it should be. BananaAnna Posted July 4, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2017 I wonder if the excursion on smaller boat was able to go to glacier...
njhikergirl Posted July 4, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 4, 2017 Yes, the passengers were able to transfer from ship to boat for their excursion. The Solstice then headed to Juneau for our early arrival.
BananaAnna Posted July 4, 2017 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2017 Thank you for the reply! On our previous Alaska cruise our ship stopped about 4-5 miles away from Hubbard Glacier. We were very disappointed, especially watching other ships go WAY closer than us. (That was on the Mercury.) We've booked the excursion this cruise and would really hate to miss it. Ruthie1017 Posted July 9, 2017 #7 Share Posted July 9, 2017 Brent Nixon told the captain it was probably an earthquake that caused the increase in ice. It was not expected to be as bad as it was.
tuffy0317 Posted July 9, 2017 #8 Share Posted July 9, 2017 I wonder if the excursion on smaller boat was able to go to glacier... Yes! And it was amazing! Solstice made it half way down Endicott Arm before turning around; however, our small boat excursion went off without a hitch and went up Tracy Arm to Sawyer Glacier. It was great and well worth the money. As others have said, there was an unprecedented amount of ice in Endicott Arm.
