Are formal nights known ahead of cruise

We are going on a 10 day cruise on the Royal. It notes that there will be eight smart casual nights and two formal nights. Will we be able to know the two formal nights ahead of time (e.g., in the Cruise Personalizer) or are they just announced through the Patters or guessed at based on previous patterns or port days? Thanks for any assistance.
