As someone else has mentioned Devinci Code, The Kill Artist, The English Assistant, The Confessor, 1st the Die, 2nd Chance & 3rd Degree. They have all been recommended on another site. Enjoy.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

The Kill Artist, The English Assassin and the Confessor are by Daniel Silva. The Confessor is far superior to the DaVinci Code, IMHO. The latest in the series is A Death in Vienna. Another good cruise book but not very "light" in tone is Birds of Prey by J.A. Jance (a J.P. Beaumont mystery) It is set on a cruise to Alaska.

I love the Carl Hiaasen, Stuart Woods (read Blood Orchid on Century, the last Holly Barker before his latest which pairs Barker and his male character), Randy Wayne White, Kinky Friedman (now there's a laugh out loud mystery!)
and any of the Sweet Potato Queen books! Any of the above authors will give you a great read. Tampa Burns is just out and I can't wait to get my hands on that one. Like I've said before on these boards, I have more luck with audiobooks by the pool. I can listen and still people watch and as long as the tapes are unabridged, I'm ok with it. Then, of course, I have to have a 'real' book to read at night in my cabin! Nothing like the feel of a book!

I haven't done any fictional reading in a while. I am looking for suggestions for "girlie" ( not related to girlie mags )books which are light reading. Cotton candy for the brain. What do you think?

If you want to laugh out loud at hilarious but sweet stories, read anything by Stuart McLean. My favourite is "The Vinyl Cafe Unplugged". The story called "Harrison Ford's Toes" had me laughing till I cried.

As for girlie stories, I really enjoyed "Bridget Jones' Diary" as well as the other books by the same author.

And although they might not be easy to find, Marissa Piesman's little mysteries are a real hoot.

Great thread, guys!

Doreen,

Try "Flirting With Pete" and/or "The Vineyard" by Barbara Delinsky. They're both great "girlie" books, without being sappy romance novels.

Skipping Christmas by Grisham was out a couple of x-mas's ago - it was so funny.
I also like reading Clive Cussler, James Patterson, John Grisham, J D Robb & all types of mysteries. Also the 2 books by Mitch Albom - Tuesdays with Morrie & The 5 People you will meet in Heaven.

I just finished reading Jane Heller's newest book, "Best Enemies". All of her books are very good for light reading on a cruise. The dialogue is very funny and clever. This latest book is her 11th - I've loved every single one.

If you're going to Alaska, read Peter Jenkins' "Looking for Alaska." This is a true account of a Tennesee man's adventures living in Alaska for a year with his family. He writes of learning to mush dogs, visiting out in the bush, going salmon fishing, whale fishing, bear attacks, a bear's stalking his hometown during the summer, being scard to death on the little planes, visiting native vilages. It's a real captivating slice of life book. You will feel like you have been to Alaska by the time you have read it. He is the same guy who wrote the best seller "A Walk Across America" back in the 1970s when he -- you got it--walked across America.

I ordered Skipping Christmas because it seemed like the most recommended book on this thread. Reading it before the cruise is a big tempation but I'll wait.
Thanks so much.

Some great summer reads are Summer Sisters, by Judy Blume, and The Saving Graces, by Patricia Gaffney. I agree with the previous mentions of Harlen Coben, these are great suspense novels. Try John Sanford for murder stories, and Jennifer Crusie for laughs and light romance (Welcome to Temptation is my favorite.) Karin Slaughter is my new favorite grisly murder mystery author, a lot like Patricia Cornwell. LuAnn Rice is always good, as is Nora Roberts. Have fun!

just read "a walk across america" by peter jenkins and can recommend it heartily. Hard to go wrong with anything by Robt Ludlum, Stuart Woods, Robt Parker, Ken Follett, Stephen Frey, David Baldacci (try "the winner"), the Prey series by John Sandford, Clive Cussler, and have thoroughly enjoyed a new (to me) author that my sis turned me on to, Wilbur Smith (try his "Birds of Prey" and the sequel to it "Monsoon"), also consider anything by Nelson Demille .

and for any of you with kids or grandkids from about 7-14 take a look at "Walter The Farting Dog" by William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray. A GREAT picture book that will have the kids rolling with laughter (and us politically incorrect adults get a kick out of it too)

Great "girly" books (a term I learned in a bookstore in Killarney, Ireland 2 years ago!) are ones by Janet Evanovich, Marian Keyes, Jane Green, if you like light mystery, Sue Grafton <alphabet series & best to start with "A is for Alibi">.

Just finished "Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons" - a good girly book about a women's book club and their lives and friendships from the late sixties to late nineties. Very enjoyable.
