DiveCruiser Posted April 16, 2006 #2 Share Posted April 16, 2006 Most operators will take a snorkler with divers but Aruba from what I remmeber Do NOT have reefs that you can snorkle and dive. Bob
Arubalisa Posted April 16, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 16, 2006 I would contact Unique Sports at http://emails.visitaruba.com/dynamic/servlet/Email?CLIENT_ID=6 and telll them what day you will be in port and what you have in mind. Most of the operators in Aruba use the Pedernales wreck for their resort course dive in the afternoon. This was an oil tanker that was torpedoed in 1942 during World War II by a German submarine. Interesting story, the wreck was cut into 3 pieces by the US military who left the mid section behind. The bow and stern were towed back to the states and welded together. The ship was then placed into service during the Normandy invasion later on in the war. Large pieces of the wreck are spread out interspersed with coral. Visible and spread out across the bottom at a shallow depth of 25-28 feet you will see piping, wash basins, toilets and even a torpedo. Makes for a nice relaxing dive with plenty of bottom time and stuff to see and shallow enough for a snorkeler to get a good view too. In our 25+ dives in Aruba we have found that most of the dive companies head to the deeper reefs and wrecks (80 feet - 100 ft) to the south of Oranjestad (a longer boat ride) in the morning and then stick closer to their base for shallower dives in the afternoon: the Antilla or Pedernales Wrecks, Arashi or Malmok Reefs. Snorkel tours stop at the Antilla Wreck and snorkel over it. All of the major dive companies in Aruba also dive this wreck. So this is another good option.
