Cabin upgrades?

Well there is rubbing a lucky unicorn...

Yes, you can get an upgrade by being in the right place at the right time.

Let's say you are Princess Corp. you have a ship that has 40 good, unsold, upgradeable cabins near the top of the ladder, you can move 20 cabins to minisuites from balconies, 10 from outsides to balconies and 40 from insides to outsides.

It is a trickle down concept, a suite can cause up to 3 upgrades by itself. Bottom line you need to be on a not sold-out sailing and one of the % that gets a gift.

Princess says it has something to do with being a loyal past passenger but I have personal experience with new sailors being moved while 12 timers not.

So... back to the Unicorn.

Book a gurantee and there is a high probability that you will get a category upgrade. Some same only "true" upgrade is from inside to outside or balcony to minisuite but Princess calls a BD to a BC an upgrade.

Depends on how you define "high" probability BJS, I have been on ships where it was nearly 0% but I agree that a cat guarentee is the best approach.

Princess will upgrade when they can but it is always a supply demand issue, demand is constant (gimme, gimme, gimme) but supply is not constant, popular times of year can mean zero open cabins.

Agree icon_smile.gif and think when the ship fills has a great deal to do with it also.

A note on guarantee upgrades: If you book a guarantee, there are very few cabins in the lowest category, i.e. on the Grand there are a total of 8 BE/BF balcony cabins. You have a very high probability of getting a higher category balcony cabin. The same goes with mini-suites; there are only two AE's (Grand Princess). As happened to us, you might be asssigned the lowest cabin category, then get an "Upgrade Notice" from Princess or your TA when you are bumped out of that cabin.

The more impressive upgrades are just luck of the draw, IMO. I don't really know that you can do anything to influence upgrades, except perhaps the probability that receiving such an upgrade will cause you to move up in the future. Even then, the numbers of passengers that Princess deals with on an annual basis would make such a marketing exercise very difficult.

Completed:

Sea Princess, Royal Princess, Grand Princess (3X), Caribbean Princess, Golden Princess

Any upgrade thread should also carry the notion that not all "upgrades" have much impact. An inside to inside or same type but different "category", is usually just the same cabin in a "better" location. I don't really see that much difference untill you get moved from type to type.

Being single and traveling alone I book and inside with guarantee......I just knew what I would get if I received an upgrade, and I was not to be dissapointed!!! outside cabin with a big ole life boat smack dab in the middle of the window!!!!! But I just got a big kick out of it and glad I did get the upgrade....really doesn't bother me...I'm just thankful that I can cruise
