Has anyone made a call using a calling card at a payphone here? I have an AT&T card and the international access code to use here but was told it may or may not work.

Unfortunately the ATT prepaid phone cards don't work at most payphones in the Carib. We found that it seems to be the best bet to buy a Cable and Wireless phone card which seem to be the most common payphone found.

I found that the best approach is to buy a local calling card. Most islands have their own. Watch the rates on some of the pay phones. I saw phones at Cozumel that accepted US credit card at 20.00 per minute. Right on the pier where the ship docks.

Get a Cable and Wireless phone card, but be prepared to pay dearly for your minutes. I pay over 1.00usd per minute to call the US these days.. and more to other parts of the world. A pay phone may even be highter.

Actually calls to the US and Canada are $0.80 BDS per minute from a land line. It gets a bit more expensive when using a calling card but depending on when you call it does not usually exceed $1.00 US which is about $2.04 BDS.

 

Overseas rates have been significantly reduced recently and continue to get lower. It will be a premium rate charged for the C & W phone card but it should be managable(sp)
