October 12th....National Day of Spain

We understand that Catalonians do not celebrate this day but it is a National Holiday and we will be arriving the morning of Friday the 12th. Are we correct that shops, markets, banks, government offices, some restaurants will be closed? Will most museums, tours, cathedrals, sites of interest operate on a regular schedule? Will public transportation revert to a Sunday schedule? Will things resume back to normal operation on Saturday the 13th?

Any areas prone to demonstrations that we should avoid? Any other advice?

Thanks

Yes, yes, yes and yes.

Not particularly, for many years any gathering in Barcelona on that day has been limited to some small Spanish ultra-right and fascists groups and they have been given permission to demonstrate in a small area outside the city centre, in the backside of Montjuïc. Still, for the past two years, due to the convulse political climate between Catalonia and Spain, there have been a few thousands gathering in Plaça Catalonia... but nothing that would affect you in any way. Nothing to match the 1.5 to 2 million that gather on Sept 11th, the National Day of Catalonia and yet there has never been any incidents.
