Has anyone had any luck using T-Mobile cell phone in the Western Caribbean?

Yes, I called the U.S. from Grand Cayman for about $1.99 per minute and from Cozumel for $1.49 per minute (back in January, 2004). You can call T-Mobil and get their rates for international sites before you leave as we do this in case of emergency. You have to have them set you up for international calls (which is free on our plan) and then ask them for the price at each port you be staying. There are some ports you can't get reception. I think one is Princess Cays and I believe we couldn't get out of Costa Maya.

I had no problem receiving/making calls in Ocho Rios. Mind you, it's very expensive ~!!!

But is it cheaper than the $8 or more per minute on the ship. I heard that one person had a $100 phone call by the time they found him on the ship.

I got a good signal about from Key West before I could even spot it. Any place other that, it was in roam.

DEFINATELY cheaper then that ~!!!

We were able to use our cell phones in St Thomas without paying extra. Another place would be San Juan. Other than that, you would need to get the extra service from the areas you are traveling to and pay the additional rates.
