grandmadarlene Posted December 26, 2005 #1 Share Posted December 26, 2005 We will be sailing in July on the 7 day out of Barcelona. I will have my 4 grandkids with me and we have a tradition of flying kites at different places in the world. Is there any reason to bring the kites along? Would it be allowed? I found one mention in the search of the old threads but no confirmation that it actually occurred. Would appreciate your greater knowledge. Haven't cruised in a number of years and I can see things have changed alot. Thanks in advance.
shoreguy Posted December 26, 2005 #2 Share Posted December 26, 2005 Without a doubt an original question:) One thing for sure you could fly them in the ports and add those locations to the traditiion. I have no idea how the crew would react to kites flying from the ship.
Rare troyphoto Posted December 26, 2005 #3 Share Posted December 26, 2005 One thing that I would be concerned about is NCLs No Dumping at Sea Policy. They prefer that even cigarette butts are not tossed overboard. Now, the way I fly kites, the darn thing would be in the water inside of five minutes. The other concern, would be open access to areas that you wouldn't accident bop someone on the head with a wayward kite. Staying as far Aft as possible would probably be the best. While Decks 13 and above might appeal, there are other public areas immediately below that might be a problem. On the Jewel, only Deck 7 and Deck 12 have aft access without some open areas below you. Deck 7 is the main path of those wishing to walk laps around the ship. You could probably stay out of the way as long as the walkers kept to single file along the aft section (its not real wide along there). Deck 12 aft is called "The great outdoors" and is set up for casual dining. There are tables and chairs set up in that area all the time. It is fairly deserted (except at meal times). Below is the link to my WebShots gallery, which shows quite a few images of Deck 12 Aft. http://community.webshots.com/album/526022990ZmCrzv Now if you have a balcony cabin along the aft end, you would probably have all the access you need.:)
Zimomiller Posted December 26, 2005 #4 Share Posted December 26, 2005 We have great memories of sailing kites off the aft pool deck of the Norway. I remember sea days when there would be a kite or twtied to the hand railing aft all afternoon. Pretty cool to see.

Cuizer2 Posted December 26, 2005 #6 Share Posted December 26, 2005 I don't know if you can sail a kite off the back of a cruise ship, but in case you can, make sure the string is very strong. If the ship is moving at 20 knots into a 20 knot headwind, you kite will be flying in a 46 MPH wind. On the other hand, if you ship is moving at 20 knots with a 20 knot tail wind, you kite is not going to fly at all.

angelsx4 Posted December 29, 2005 #8 Share Posted December 29, 2005 What a fun question! I told my dh about it and he thought that was an awesome idea. Let me know if you call NCL and get an answer. We sail next week. It would be a fun purchase in port too.
grandmadarlene Posted December 29, 2005 Author #9 Share Posted December 29, 2005 I did call, which I should have done in teh first place...Duh. They said no and since we aren't in a balcony cabin, we would have to use the public areas. Cruiz2 had some excellent points. I remember sailing a kite on Haleakala. That was easier said than done. All the winds travel up the volcano and converge on top. Here are the grandsons when they were 8 and 6. Not a great shot but fun.
