Taxi to Puerto Plata

I know this topic has been addressed many times, but is it easy to get a taxi outside the gate of the port and hire a driver for a few hours. Would it be better to go on a City tour w/ an operator like Marysol? Wife and I don't speak Spanish, but also don't like the idea of having someone dictate our schedule. Also, hate to book a tour if the weather turns bad that day.

There are many taxis available outside the port area and they are all very helpful. We paid about $40 for the two of us for a 2-3 hour highlights tour. We don't speak spanish, and our driver really didn't speak english...do be sure to clarify that in the beginning. We had fun all the same.

We just returned and paid $70 for 3 people to have a 3-ish hour tour of the city. We made sure to get an English speaking driver.
