we normally get off the boat and talk to guides or taxis and pick a tour then. Not all ports do this, so first want to verify this an option at PR. Then more specific we like to get a tour of city and then go to a beach where we can get drinks and sit in the shade then catch a cab back to ship. Your advise would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I can help....when you get off the ship, at the end of the pier is a gaggle of taxis and tour operators. We have found that San Juan is very "user friendly" .Our first time there, we approached the tour guides and asked what they had to offer. We lucked out and found one for about $10 PP in an air conditioned van to drive us to all the major tourist areas. He was very knowledgeable.

We quickly learned of the free trolley system. If you are willing to walk a couple of blocks up from the pier, there is a trolley stop. It is free and goes all over the city including Old San Juan, and both the forts. OSJ is so beautiful that its worth getting out on foot and walking. There are plenty of vendors selling drinks and ice pops. We have found the best thing is to ask a local for recommendations of the best places to eat, get a snack or drink. They won't steer you wrong.

When we disembarked there were several air conditioned bus tour guides. He took a list of what time everyone’s flights were and gave us a tour around San Juan on the castle and he came back and picked us all up at different times while we explored the shopping area to take us to the airport. It ended up being about the same price as a direct taxi ride to the airport and they hold your luggage for you.
