Tween/teenaged kids

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

We’re doing our first Royal Caribbean cruise this July, we are so excited! Our kids will be almost 15 and 12, and I’m wondering about them wondering around the ship on their own. What is your comfort level with letting kids at that age go around on the ship on their own?

I have a 14 and will be 12yo, we're going on our first cruise in July too! I think I feel comfortable enough to let my kids go on their own. From friends that have been on the ship before, they say that the teen club or whatever you call it is a ton of fun, and they make friends real quick! I guess it depends on how comfortable you are with the maturity level of your children. I plan on leaving notes in the cabin for my kids to let them know where we'll be, whether its the pool, bar, casino, show etc. As long as we meet up for meals and they check in periodically, I'll feel okay with them roaming.

We generally travel in groups- so as long as the kids are paired up, and are where they say they are going to be when they say they are going to be there we allow them a fair amount of freedom. As they have been cruising since 4 and 7 they have earned it. They don't always behave for us, but do so in public. This year they will be 18 and 14. So it will be interesting traveling with an 'of age' teen! She thought it was the best when she could 'legally' go into the Solarium!

You know your kids and their maturity level- as long as they stick together I don't see why not. And in my experience if the kids are out late with out an adult Royal has shooed them along in accordance with curfew. Only happened once. We were out of San Juan and there was a big boxing match that went past 1. As soon as it was over security sent them on their way. And they did ask permission to stay.

Our kids are now 17 and 12 but we have cruise for many years. We let our kids go on their own following our rules. Our rules are the same as home. Tell us where you are going. Tell us if plans change. No going into other peoples cabins. Be respectful of others. Our curfew is curfew, not the ships curfew. No purchases on your seapass without our approval. Stay out of adults only areas. Walk. We have never had an issue.
