Where to Buy Wine in Southampton?

Recommended Posts

My husband and I will be staying at the Dolphin Hotel on High Street in Southampton. Is there somewhere within walking distance that I can purchase a couple of bottles of wine? Thanks in advance!!

Exit your hotel & turn right.

You'll see the Bargate (part of the city walls) at the top of High Street. It's a four-minute walk.

Halfway there you'll see a Lidl lo-cost grocery store on the right. It has a moderate wine selection.

Further up, in the pedestrianized zone & almost at the Bargate is a Tesco Express grocery store on the left. Again, a moderate selection of wines.

Nothing that takes your fancy?

Turn left at the Bargate & 100 yds ahead of you at the end of the city wall is the big West Quay Mall. In the mall, Marks & Spencer - a more up-market grocery store - has a wider selection, broadly better wine & higher prices but still mainstream.

If you want to go the whole hog, a further 10 minute walk is Majestic Wines, opposite the train station.

Specialist store, huge selection, knowledgeable staff.

Thanks, John Bull! I look forward to walking around Southampton, if only for a short while. My mother was born there (on Maple Street) in 1919 and her parents and three siblings emigrated to the U.S. in 1924.

There's no Maple Street in Southampton - though mebbe the street disappeared during the blitz or a redevelopment.

Or was it Maple Road? In the residential district of Bitterne. Houses there look to have been built late 19th / early 20th century.
