Confused about tipping

Sorry but here is another tipping question having never cruised Celebrity before when shown to your cabin at the start of your cruise do you tip the steward who takes you there. I am confused about all this tipping I thought you just put the tips in a little envelope at the end of the cruise.

Relax.:D The tipping should not stress anyone out. The tipping on the last night is for the normal crew that you will be associated with throughout the cruise. IE: room stewart, waiter, asst. waiter, etc.

If anyone YOU think has been a help to you, you should tip them. We usually get on board before they start escorting to the room, but if they do, I tip them.:)

Mitzi, If you arrive before the cabin are available, they will direct you towards the buffet for lunch. On our first cruise on Celebrity, we were escorted to our cabin. We offered a tip and it was politely refused. If I were escorted again, I would definitely offer a tip, probably $5. I have no idea if this is a proper amount. Tipping sometimes is so hard to figure out if your cheap or generous. Offer whatever is comfortable for your budget. Don't stress over this!!! Enjoy!!!

I agree that tipping should not stress anyone out...you will tip those who most afect you at the end of the cruise and the bar staff automatically as you order a drink. For all others, if someone provides you with service above and beyond, tip them...however, they aren't expecting a tip. For example, last year there was a young girl whose job was obviously to clean the ladders (stairwells) everyday...this had to be an entry level position...but she was there and every day she would smile and wish me a good morning...On the next to last day, I did two things...first I found her and gave her a rather healthy tip...perhaps more importantly, I mentioned her by name in my critique...wait there were three things..I found the Hotel manager and told him what a wondeful and cheerful person she was. I sure hope she got a promotion soon after.

For what it's worth, we have never tipped the escort. They have not taken but one carry on bag from us--always my husbands!! ~~leaving me to carry (roll) my carry on and deal with my large ;) travel purse. I don't know why it is that they always take hubby's bag and leave the poor old lady to fend for herself! :p Anyway, we usually board before the escorts are in place. Then we come back down for the "champagne" :D

We just sailed on our first cruise and knew nothing about tipping but from the advise of my TA and folks on this site.Even though we pre paid our tips, we gave our escort a tip , also as we had great service we gave extra on Chritmas day and at the end of the cruise to our normal crew and certain Bar servers around the ship who looked after us.

I have also mention some by name on our comments form.

Mitzi, don't stress over all this tipping stuff. It's really not all much to worry over. Here's a guide for you, I hope it helps.

For the porters who will take your bags when you arrive at the dock: 1 British Pound per bag ($1.50 to $2 USD)

For the person who escorts you to your cabin: 2 British Pounds ($5 USD)

For the room service delivery person: 1.5 British Pounds ($2 to $3 USD)

For everyone else, such as your room Steward, waiter and assistant waiter, those are tipped at the end of the cruise. For those who bring you drinks at a bar, restaurant or at the pool, they automatically add a 15% gratuity to your bill.

When we were shown to our cabin, it was our room steward who took us there. I would not tip him until the end of the cruise. We usually make our own way to the cabin anyway. I always tip whoever brings me room service at that time. If there is a favorite bar server you want to tip that you feel has gone above and beyond and you want to add to the automatic tips, do that at the end of the cruise. Wine steward as well. I like walking up to the person and telling them what a good job they did for the cruise and thanking them and handing them a envelope with money in it. It makes it more personal and they are usually so surprised to be singled out, and always appreciate the compliment. This is the way we do it anyway.

We did a B2B last October. Half way thru, we changed dinner seatings so we got new waiters. All four were very specific about us writing their names on our comment cards. It seems the comment cards are a huge part of the promotion ladder. It makes sense as the waiter make almost twice what the asst. makes. I agree that speaking to a supervisor also goes a long way, but the most important thing is to say thank you to the staff who serve you in any way. They need to hear that more, AS DO WE ALL!

Hi

I have a question? I did not think to pre-pay for my tips as I am used to Princess auto tipping, which I really like. It automatically gets added to my account and I only need small amounts of cash for extra tipping.

Can I get the tips added to my ship board account on Celebrity once I get on board so I don't have to deal with envelopes and cash at the end?

Thank you,

Yes, you can. A few days into your cruise an envelope & form with staff you are expected to tip and suggested amounts will be delivered to your stateroom. It must be turned in by the indicated cut off date & time to be effective. It has provisions for adding to suggested amounts on the form. You may also add to an individual's tip by presenting it in cash to them.

croftonbill---because you made more than $25 a week. these folks work for next to nothing and send most of allt hey make home to their families. We always go over the recommended amounts unless service is terrible, which has never happened. In all our cruises we have only seen one disgruntled employee. she must have been on her last cruise!

A Typical Cruise just to get to our cabin:

Airport Shuttle to Orlando: (6 bags) - $8.00 Tip

Porter at Airport - $6.00

Porter at arriving airport - $6.00

Cab to Hotel $8.00

Hotel Bell Man $6.00

Checkout Bellman $6.00

Shuttle/Taxi to Cruise $6.00

Port Baggage Handlers $6.00

Escort/ 2 Bags 0.00

Total to get to cabin $52

Repeat most of it going home.

Tipping is just a way of life in this world. I have never tipped the escort since he doesnt carry my bags and I really think I could find my cabin blindfolder.

I thought it was just me who thought it silly to tip someone to take me to my room. I'm pretty sure I can find my way and I don't need the champagne.

As a registered nurse you make more money than other professions.

They do not make a lot of money working on these ships. They depend on tips to support their families back home. Do you begrudge giving tips at restaurants as well? Just a thought, since you seem so upset at the tipping. You are lucky you don't live here then, as we are expected to give tips to our garbage men and our mail man. You would be really cranky then! Take care fellow Canadian! Take a happy pill and enjoy your cruise!;)
