Paradise Beach is free for use of its beach chairs/umbrellas,(but you are expected to buy some food/drinks). It is $8pp for use of the water toys.
Use of the water toys is optional. PB is one of the nicer beach clubs, but because of the water toys, it attracts families with kids. It isn't the quietest beach club and can be busy when there are lots (6 or more) of ships visiting the day you are there.

What beach would you suggest then that isn't full of kids?

The East side of the island has beautiful sandy beaches although they warn about swimming when the surf is up... but the beach is still beautiful. Chen Rio and Meszcalitos are 2 of them.. you have to rent a car (scooter - NOT recommended) or take a taxi ($$) over there...

Dzul Ha, which now has a small sandy beach and used to be the best choice for shore snorkeling before wilma.

Playa Palancar Click to see my photos.

The generalization is that beach clubs that have water toys attract families with children.

Any of the beach clubs on the East side. Coconuts has the best view and we found most of our shells on the sandy beach directly to the south of there. Don't collect shells from any of the beach clubs on the West side as it is against the rule of the Marine park to do so. All the west side beach clubs are in the Marine park.
