Hi allStopping here next week. It’s the only place we haven’t booked an excursion. Will have my elderly parents with me. Thought we could do hop on hop off bus, tourist train or a horse & carriage tour. Just wondered how easy these would be to get if there are lots of tourists going around. My mother can’t do loads of walking. Or any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

Whatever you decide, don't miss the Astronomical Clock on the tower next to the Cathedral at 12 noon.

 

 

Very close to the port gates, no more than 5 minutes walk. Reviews of it on Tripadvisor. Probably the best thing to see in Messina.

It is very easy to get to the square where the little tourist train leaves. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here as we had previously holidayed in Taormina so decided to make this an easy day and just have a wander. We walked to the square and took the tourist train round town, back for a drink in the square and then watched the clock display. The hop on hop off bus was right next to where we got on the train and the horse and carriages were even closer to where we docked, there were also lots of taxi drivers offering trips. We were there in July and no problems getting on the train and the hop on hop of bus looked fairly empty.

Most people go to Taormina when their ship ports in Messina, as it is far more charming. Have you checked your Roll Call for small group tours you could join or considered the tours your cruise line is offering? With someone who can't do lots of walking I would also consider renting a car to get to Taormina.
