Cruise Ship laundry room etiquette!

SUSANITA

Recommended Posts

I always do laundry while on board. I certainly don't enjoy it, but it is inevitable. I usually do laundry while we are in port, to avoid waiting.

You asked about etiquette. IMHO, if the machine has stopped it is perfectly appropriate to remove the clothing, carefully placing in a clean location (usually on top of a front-loading machine). I see it done virtually every cruise. I've never seen anyone upset about it, but wouldn't care if they were. Also IMHO people should take responsibility to be there when their machines finish. But if not, move their stuff.

I had the same kind of problem at a Disney resort. I was in the room waiting as everyone else was for a dryer, as there were a couple dryers broken.

This lady was folding her clothes and than reached into a washing machine and removed a "friends" clothes and put them into her dryer. My clothes had gone in prior to her "friends". She did this while I went to get a drink. I was livid and gave her the eye. But being I was in Disney, I didnt say a word and let it go.

Went I went early the next morning, guess what, she had left some socks in the dryer.

I will not confess, nor acknowledge that 2 of the 4 socks fell into the trash. I did make sure that the little boys Buzz underwear was left on the counter for her to find. (Being a dad, I know how important they must have been.) Oh did I say that the 2 socks that didnt fall into the trash were not matching? OOPS!

I also do laundry each trip and was really blown away at Thanksgiving on the Paradise when some lady got mad at me for doing more than one load. I put my loads in 2 dryers, placed the quarters in at the exact same time, left for approx. 15 minutes - came back to sit and watch them the rest of the time. Low and behold when I came back one load was still running and the other had been removed - wet - and placed on the folding table. When I grumbled that there was no way that machine stopped she denied it. Kind of funny that the other machine ran at least another 15 minutes. Taking wet clothes out of the machine while it is running is just NOT RIGHT!

Well, if they don't, I'm going to be very wrinkly. Any thoughts on the travel irons?

WeatherGeek is right on. Irons in the stateroom are strictly prohibited. This is from Carnival's website:

Safety Precautions due to "Safety Precautions", the following items are not permitted onboard:

Irons

Heating Pads

Candles

The laundry facilities irons work great!

I didn't find too much trouble finding a machine or an iron to use. We went to one laundry room and it was full so we went over the the other one and not a soul or a sock was there. We put our clothes in the washer and went for lunch on the Lido deck, came back and put the clothes into the dryer, went to the gift shop and browsed around for a bit and then brought our clothes back to our cabin to fold. No biggie.

I know those people who save chairs for no one that ever appears!!!!!!!!!! But on the Conquest when I sailed the iron was in the biggest demand. I can't believe I helped at least 4 other people through pleats just so they would leave and I got my turn!!!!!!

Can anyone tell me what the cost of the machines are? We'll be on the Sensation. Also, am I getting this right...Carnival has laundry rooms and laundry services? What is the cost of the laundry service? Do the laundry rooms sell detergents, etc?

Travel irons are not allowed onboard. Try taking a travel steamer. I use a small hand held model that I bought in the luggage area at Kmart and it works great!

A load of wash is $2 per load and so is the dryer (about 40-45mins drying time).

I almost always do laundry onboard cuz I never take more than 1 suitcase on a cruise, regardless of duration (I cruise anywhere from 5-11 days at a time). I have no problem removing clothes from a stopped washer or dryer and setting them on the counter if the owner is notr around....this is understood in land based laundromats.

I'd rather do laundry on vacation than pack too much! My last vacation was a 10 day-er, I needed to be able to do laundry, especially with the new airline weight restrictions!

Other information: Just came back from the Legend and the cost of the bag of laundry (the special that the above posters talked about) is up to $15 now. I did not see the size of the bag that they provided. The cost of the laundry soap from the dispenser in the laundry room is $1 (we brought detergent from home - you know, the laundry detergent tablets. It is easiest with which to travel). I was pleasently surprised to always find an available washer and drier each time I went to do laundry. This includes the day before debarkation.

Me too Sue, I'd rather do a load or two on a vacation than lug around a ton of luggage. Even with the wheeled uprights, it still gets tiresome at times.

Hey Chraolette!
Saw you on this board and wanted to say hello. I'm off on another cruise next month, just had to try it again, this time with my daughter. I'm sure I'll enjoy this one with a better traveling companion. I loved the Pride, just not the people I traveled with. Take care.

Garie, it's pretty simple html code. start with <ximgx src=x"http://www. websitelocation.com">

being sure to delete the "x"'s I added to the code and put whatever website your image is located.

But make sure it is your website or you have the permission of the webowner to use their bandwidth. I can't use any of my geocities websites because 2 minutes worth of viewing uses my entire bandwidth for the day.

My friend who designed the gif/image hosts the image on her server and she has said I can use the bandwidth.

Whatever you do, DON'T find an image you like and just use that website. That's stealing bandwidth and is extremely rude. You could also cause problems with that persons server if too many people are viewing an image linked to their site.

Tori

As far as safety goes, how come a travel steamer would be allowed but not a travel iron?

Throwing a couple of loads in the wash during the trip works for me. Saved time two years ago on the Victory since my luggage was lost on the way home, when it was finally returned it was all clean! Once ran into a laundry queen who was occupying all of the washers on the floor. She advised me that she still had laundry to do so I'd better find another floor. In the spirit of Christmas, I laughed it off and didn't start a ruckus in the laundry room. It takes all kinds, but as a rule I find most fellow cruisers to be a happy bunch!

Washing Machine warning on the 9th floor of the Triumph. It states it is a 30 minute cycle on the washer, but it took 55 minutes just to fill up with water the first time. I spent 2 hours running back and forth waiting to finish as not to hog the washer.

 • 4 months later...
Guess I don't care about how I look as much as others. I can't remember a time on vacation when I actually used an iron. I have used the old "steam" method - where you hang something in the bathroom while showering, but I refuse to iron on vacation. Heck, I can hardly be convinced to pull out the iron around here. :D

I did do laundry on one or both of my RC cruises. Now we just make sure to take enough clothes for the trip. However, I have been known to wash out a couple of sets of underwear in the bathroom sink because I can't make it the entire vacation. Now, I think I'll just send it out and let others wash it.

However, I don't trust any laundry service to wash my outer clothes because with the industrical dryers they use. I cannot believe my stuff would come back without shrinkage.

Anyone have problems with shrinkage after laundry service?

And no, you cannot blame the laundry service when the real problem is too many wonderful desserts. :)
I can't see wasting a minute of my precious vacation doing laundry (I'd rather haul it back dirty and worry about it at home) - though I have used the laundry rooms occasionally (and grudgingly!) to iron clothes - and my pet peeve is someone ahead of me ironing, literally, 20 outfits. One formal night there were about 7 people in line and one lady was ironing her entire wardrobe! People were steaming!
I'm one of those people irons all their outfits at the same time. I absolutely HATE ironing and would rather do it all at once than know that I'm going to spend even a small part of EVERY DAY of my vacation with the iron in my hand.

BUT: I always iron it on the very first day as soon as we board! No one else ever seems to be doing this which means I accomplish my goal and I don't think it's rude to other passengers.

I agree with the other stuff. And who wants to do laundry while on vacation? I, too, save it for when we get home. But, last cruise, DH ran out of undies (even though I'd reminded him exactly how many pairs he needed AND advised him to pack EXTRA!--but that's another issue!) and we had to wash some. On my third trip to the laundry room, I found the same pile of clothes in the washers so I removed clothes from one of them and laid them on the table/counter. (DH about had a fit because he thought I was the one being rude!)

When we got back to the laundry room--just as the machine was finishing--those clothes were still there. We noticed and commented on it and then put ours into the dryer and left. Again, when we returned, the same clothes were still sitting where I had put them. By that time several hours had passed since I'd started my laundry--and that doesn't even take into account the two visits to the laundry room when I first looked for an empty washer! I told DH that if I were a different person, I'd take that pile of wet clothes and hide 'em!

I am one of those that goes to the laundry immediately and irons my wrinkles because no matter what, I can not pack and travel wrinkle free. While everyone else is looking around I get it done and am free the rest of the week.
If someone else shows up with one item I step aside even though once I almost
ironed a pair of Dockers for this poor guy that couldn't quite handle it.
