gardenbunny Posted February 10, 2006 Author #51 Share Posted February 10, 2006 I am so ready to go on this trip - now I'm only wishing there would have been something a little longer (7 days vs. my 3 or the longer trips to Hawaii) - I may try real hard to get on board for the New England trip in the fall. Thanks for the link to the Holland Fox excursion - someone else sent Carnival's - so, let's hope Cunard will offer it or we can find something at the pier. Don't forget the CC group meeting 3:00 in the Library on the 22nd -
www.missiongrove.com Posted February 10, 2006 #52 Share Posted February 10, 2006 My family and friends are booked on the QM2 West coast break and received the same information from Cunard as in prior posts: Departure remains as scheduled returning back to departure port for festivities on the 23rd and then on to Ensenada. We understand that the reasoning for rescheduling is due to the unexpected press and subsequent interest. ( I suppose that many want to see the whiners for themselves). The feeling is, with so many planning on viewing this event, it may be near impossible for booked guests to disembark -embark on time. The port of Long Beach, it now seems, may be a virtual madhouse. Thank goodness we will be watching from our balcony. A smart move by Cunard and the City of Long Beach ,in my opinion. We would be happy to stay in port if we had to yet would be very unhappy if we could not reach our ship in the first place! emilygrace Posted February 10, 2006 #53 Share Posted February 10, 2006 It's going to be pretty hectic at the pier on the 22nd. Just got an email from my TA and she said there is going to be three HUGE groups of agents boarding at the same time for a tour of the QM2. And when we return to San Pedro on Saturday there will be another group waiting to tour her as we disembark. I have been on some of these tours of ships and they are always a lot of fun. As far as Long Beach goes, I don't think we will be able to leave the ship. We are only there for the ceremonial greeting of the two Marys. stowaway2k Posted February 11, 2006 #55 Share Posted February 11, 2006 It's interesting to note that the "official" celebrations in the Port of Los Angeles, with all the fanfare, fireboats etc., are not on her maiden arrival/departure of 22 Feb, rather on her second call in Los Angeles, on Saturday 25 Feb., as QM2 departs for Hawaii. Could it be that the Port of Los Angeles does not want to be upstaged by next door neighbor the Port of Long Beach, with the meeting of the Mary's? Or is it simply that a Saturday is probably better suited for this, with larger crowds of spectators? I guess now I should plan on hanging around San Pedro on Saturday! emilygrace Posted February 11, 2006 #56 Share Posted February 11, 2006 I was hoping we would get something to commemorate this historic event, but I guess that's for the people who paid the really BIG $$$ to go to Hawaii. We can't hang around because our flight leaves at 1:15. I'd be happy with a little pin!
gardenbunny Posted February 13, 2006 Author #57 Share Posted February 13, 2006 As I said on another thread - I think those of us on the West Coast Break are just going to be cruising around the waters of LA and Long Beach just to cruise by the QM for 3 days! Whatever - at this point, we'll just see what happens when we get there. And, likewise, our plane leaves Sat. the 25th at 1:40 so we won't get to see much of the big bash if they don't do anything on the 23rd -

Expect a lot of hoopla in the harbor. Likewise, when QM2 returns to her berth in San Pedro on the 25th, expect a lot of commotion about. You won't see the fireboat escort when QM2 departs that evening for Hawaii, but I don't think you'll be disappointed in all the excitement that you will be a part of. Actually Kyle, I think that the 25th *is* when the fireboats, etc. take place. At least according to the press release on Cunards' website. emilygrace Posted February 15, 2006 #62 Share Posted February 15, 2006 Thanks Kyle! Maybe you can give us the weather for our whole cruise next week before we leave. Then we can decide whether to believe it or not at our own discretion! Just curious about any rain in the forecast. I want to be prepared.
Happy ks Posted February 15, 2006 #63 Share Posted February 15, 2006 www.weather.com gives a 10 day forecast, so it only goes through Thursday next week. So far, 69-72 degrees, partly cloudy on Thursday, no rain predicted for that time, yet. Things can change, they always change.
emilygrace Posted February 15, 2006 #64 Share Posted February 15, 2006 Those temps sound good to me! I HATE hot weather! And I don't mind rain. I think I will throw the old umbrella in the suitcase, just in case it is raining when we get to Ensenada. I will try that weather link next Tuesday to get a better idea of what to expect. stowaway2k Posted February 16, 2006 #66 Share Posted February 16, 2006 from www.thequeensmeet.com : Led by Long Beach fireboats shooting fountains of seawater high into the air from their water cannons, and escorted by a flotilla of smaller ships, yachts and boats of all types, the Queen Mary 2 will maneuver as close to the Queen Mary’s stern as water depth will allow (approximately 1/3 mile from the Queen Mary) oh boy...watch those pods!

They can do 35 kts on only 2 pods. Just ask Carol Marlow! In fact, they can probably throw in a couple of extra crossings and several more ports per trip if they break another pod! Happy ks Posted February 17, 2006 #70 Share Posted February 17, 2006 Have a safe trip! It looks like you'll have some pretty days in Palm Springs. Have fun out there:) . Our forecast is now saying partly cloudy and cloudy, the rain forecast is gone, it looks like it might be a bit rainy this weekend, we really need it. I'll be visiting the Queen Mary this weekend, for brunch. I'll look around and see if there is any more info regarding the "meet".
Happy ks Posted February 20, 2006 #71 Share Posted February 20, 2006 A weather update, it looks like we'll have beautiful weather now, no rain predicted. A little on the cool side (mid to high 60's) at times, perhaps, but expect lots of sunshine! We were in Long Beach yesterday, at the Queen Mary and the weather was absolutely gorgeous :) . Blue skies with lots of fluffy clouds, you needed a lightweight jacket, or sweater, but very comfortable.
stowaway2k Posted February 20, 2006 #72 Share Posted February 20, 2006 A weather update, it looks like we'll have beautiful weather now, no rain predicted. quote] Whew! :) That's really good news for the skywriters! Here's the latest from the Long Beach Press Telegram:http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_3524342 I did a web search of news stories on the Royal Rendevous, and I came across stories from all over the US, the UK, Europe, South America, and Australia. Most of them are the same press release, but it's nice to know there is some national and international coverage. The Los Angeles Times though has yet to mention the Queen Mary 2's maiden call to Los Angeles on Wednesday or the rendevous with the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Hopefully they're planning on coverage later in the week. But, it is Oscar season here in Tinsletown...:o
