what's the general consensus on rental cars in this port. I wouldn't rent in Mexico because of the horror stories but Bahamas seems better.

I looked at the available excursions and honestly they suck.

Not advised in Nassau.   Plates for rentals are targeted by some not so nice locals who will rob you and worse if your found wandering outside the Bay Street tourist corridor.

 

Just take a cab or a jitney where you want to go.  Nassau is not the place you want to go "over the hill" to check out the locals.
