troy510 Posted May 9, 2019 #1 Share Posted May 9, 2019 I’m curious to see why Joy left the Asian market. A $50 million refurb after 2 years seems really expensive and unplanned. Does anyone know why?
FranknBeans Posted May 9, 2019 #2 Share Posted May 9, 2019 (edited) The market wasn't there as they expected. They had to change the size of beds, put taller chairs etc throughout the ship. Edited May 9, 2019 by FranknBeans addition
Love my butler Posted May 10, 2019 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2019 Basically the Chinese guests did not spend much money on board. A huge portion of NCL's revenue is derived from on boarding spending. This made the Chinese market unprofitable.
thetaro Posted May 10, 2019 #4 Share Posted May 10, 2019 NCL believed that they could profit in the Chinese market by putting a big shopping mall and casino. Problem is that the itinerary is not attractive. There are too many rooms and they are not selling. They keep dropping the price that attracts nothing but low-end customers. These customers don't spend money onboard and does nothing but hoarding in the buffet all day. They are better off putting a small ship and renovate it to a luxury ship with a nice casino. The Joy ship gets a bad reputation and high-end customers from Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea and Japan don't care about it.
